Here, the best band of all time unleash their true masterplan - to breathe life (and, thus, emotions) into machines. They sprang into life on the funky "The Robots", created a world all their own on the breathtaking "Metropolis" and "Spacelab", coldly, ironically dismissed the more base elements of human culture on superhit "The Model", embraced human technological achievement on the pastoral, lovely "Neon Lights", and the fusion they'd been longing for on possibly their most Teutonic moment, "The Man-Machine". Every track has a melody that manages to be both otherworldly and catchy as hell, a pulsating rhythm that was practially impossible not to at least nod your head to, and an atmospheric presence nobody can imitate. Kraftwerk's manifesto, both conceptually and musically, was finally complete. Every track is a mini-masterpiece; they added up to make one of the most thrillingly perfect musical experiences ever constructed.

The Man-Machine is exactly what it says on the tin: Kraftwerk generate electronica-based sounds throughout the album's duration, particularly specializing in the usage of vocoders and a rather exuberant melody to counter what might seem cold and soulless on the surface. Is there really any wonder how this group became so influential and managed to make a record chock full of - as Nick Butler put it - 'mini-masterpieces'? The six tracks presented on the release can prove that quality usually ends up being victorious over supercilious quantity, and these boys are taking us to a technological metropolis where humans live and breathe inside automatons.

Some of the best things in life are pretty simple. I think that's something Kraftwerk knew very well. They also knew that simplicity and elegance can coexist in the most symbiotic of ways, and that's pretty much what is expressed musically on Die Mensch-Maschine. It's interesting; the overarching theme here is mechanization and robotics, and I suppose when it was released it may have sounded like a robot playing music which may have led to the trope of cold, robotic electronic albums having themes of technological takeover and subsequent emotionlessness. Yet, this album is in no way cold and robotic in theme only, as we have some of the catchiest, most charming electronic tunes ever penned here. And while it is true that at least sonically there's not a whole lot going on in any given song, that which is going on is maxed out in terms of enjoyment. How does one listen to "Neon Lights" without a smile on their face? Simply divine.
