4.5 superb | Alabaster Jones | April 14th 17 | A lot of opinions about this album were already formed before the album even came out. Hype and anti-hype are both very real things and getting swept up in either of them is pretty embarrassing. It's hard to really say much about DAMN. right now, but it's going down a whole lot easier than To Pimp A Butterfly did, as it's arguably Kendrick's most accessible project so far. The emphasis here is much more on the atmosphere and vibes of the songs themselves rather than the stories or the lyrical escapades, although those are still good; the production shifts a lot here, with songs being connected not in style, but in theme, and in that sense, it's far from scatterbrained. Kendrick does what he wants in whatever DAMN. style he pleases here, and he's unsurprisingly excellent at all of them. "HUMBLE." is actually the worst song here, and though it's decent enough, it sticks out like a sore thumb amidst the otherwise very high quality tracklist. Could it be considered another classic? Impossible to say right now, although it's a bit too streamlined and general for one to imagine it would end up as such. Still, this is a fantastic record so far in the early listening stages, and is an album plenty of rappers would kill to have in their discography.

4.5 superb | dihstyle69 | April 14th 17 | I can already see people calling this a sell out move from kendrick due to the more trendier sound that can be found throughout the majority of the album. however, that is a really unfair assumption to make, if you take the time to properly digest the conceptual narrative that unfolds all the 14 tracks on display here. kendrick meditates on various themes like his position in the business, the fears that his status infused on him, the depressive feelings that he dealt and still deals with, coincidencies of the past that literally made it possible for him to be where he's at, and other things like politics, religion, society and the trends, etc. all of these themes show both kendrick's wicked personality and his wicknesses, culminating in an album that lets you know who kendrick really, really is. this is a really personal album and some people won't get that because on a surface level, it seems like a very straight-forward project but that isn't the truth at all. even sonically, the production has an astonishing amount of detail and texture to it, with some sounds only being able to be caught if you use really good headphones. the beat switch-ups are also used to change the characters' different moods/feelings, which is a great touch narratively speaking. it is more than enough to cement him as one of the greatest to ever do it. 4.5

3.5 great | SuperShiranui | April 14th 17 | It felt like Kendrick wanted to release an angrier and more political record soon after the election (which is understandable), without a strong concept tying every single song together like his last two albums. As a result, a few instrumentals feel half-baked and the record doesn't feel as compelling to listen to in one sitting. However, Kendrick himself sounds great everywhere (except maybe the singing on ELEMENT) and most of the tracks are enjoyable to listen to on their own.

3.5 great | Hyndez | April 14th 17 | This will have to take a few more listens to appreciate. So far in terms of a Kendrick Lamar
release, it's not terrible but it's also not incredible like the previous two LPs. Some of the
verses were delivered powerfully, and others seemed very similar to Drake's flow as if he was
featured in a banger constantly repeating the same message, for ex.(YOLO). The guest features were
ok, not too invasive and seemed to meld with the song's message pretty well. On an end-note,
Duckworth is song of the year worthy. This is the type of powerful lyricism and storytelling that
keeps me coming back to Kendrick. This album simply needed more of that.

4.5 superb | Nicksput | December 8th 17 | Kendrick Lamar's 4th album mostly doesn't live up to the massive hype surrounding it, but it's still a welcome addition to his catalog. He continues to experiment on Damn, but alot of the sparse songs feel lazy (which I'm sure was his intention), and unfinished, and it take momentum away from the album at certain points. I believe he made many of these tracks to stick it to his modern counterparts, thinking he could do the same style tracks, but better, and the final product produces mixed results. Kendrick continues to tell great narratives, mixing in his own story seamlessly along with the concept of the album, which is slightly different depending on if you listen to it in reverse order as well. When he does decide to commit to straight bars, he's still right at the top of the game, as he proves on Humble, DNA and XXX. In the end, Damn is an album that mostly takes the focus off of Kendrick's lyricism, and relies on hooks, somber atmosphere and narrative.

4.5 superb | notkanyewest | April 20th 17 | DAMN. is the best Kendrick Lamar record because it's streamlined, not simple. He's done away with
the heavy handed metaphors and left us to figure out what's going on... there's more going on than
you'd think when passively listening. He's also interfacing with hip-hop culture and tradition in a way
he hasn't before, from the Kid Capri tags to the hip-hop radio grabs of HUMBLE, LOYALTY, and
LOVE. Still, he's just as conflicted as ever, pondering the emptiness of fame, sex, the daily routine. He
ponders the fragility of life and is bothered by the idea that lives are saved and ruined every day by
"strangers" in "random predicaments". We're lucky to have him.

3.0 good | kinderfall1 | April 19th 17 | Don't let disorienting, schizophrenic bangers like DNA and Element fool you; Kendrick Lamar's raw, scatterbrained, and stripped-back follow up to 2015's To Pimp a Butterfly is also his flimsiest and most underwhelming project in years. Tracks such as Love and God are easily some of the weakest in his discography and the album suffers significantly from their inclusion. That being said, the highlights (Fear, XXX, Duckworth) are more than good enough to make Damn. one of the better hip hop projects of the year. Despite my disappointment, Kendrick is still proving on this album that he is one of the most interesting and talented artists in music. Just don't get too caught up in his lyrical ramblings, which often prove themselves to be bipolar, contradictory, and strewn-together.

3.0 good | chinesedogeater | April 15th 17 | In Kendrick Lamar's new album, DAMN, he tries something new by drifting away from some of his jazz and soul influences in favor of more rough vocal lines and less heavily textured compositions. The result is certainly something new comparatively to some of his older works such as Good Kid Mad City and To Pimp a Butterfly.
The opening track BLOOD. is a great opener with great vocal lines and melodies. It also features a clean and catchy bassline and some alternate options for instrumentation with the introduction of a string instrument such as a violin. Most of the proceeding tracks are above average but definitely not even close to the level of some of his prior works with some tracks being more impressive and some being less. A track deserving mention would be PRIDE. which is definitely a standout, but is followed by HUMBLE. which is a standout for being the worst track on the album.
The album is a step in a new direction, but not a good one. It feels as if it has had much less thought and care put into it. DAMN. is Kendricks attempt to go back in time with hip hop with some new elements.

4.0 excellent | Bedex | April 21st 24 | This is Kendrick's popular album of the time. In a way this makes it feel older than its
predecessor TPAB. Songs like HUMBLE,LOVE, and others (to an extent DNA and LOYALTY) feel like
they belong to a time now long gone by, and lack the aspect intemporel that TPAB's grandeur
offered. Where I find the album to be more successful, less out of date and more consistent is
in its lazier, hazier, woozier slower paced tracks heralded by the calming YAH which is
accompanied by many such others, and makes one wonder if DAMN could have simply been Kendrick's
relaxed album and shouldn't have delved so much into the popular harder hitting rap of its
time. Truly what I struggle with when listening to this album is that the only track that, to
me, replicates the heights of TPAB in both style of quality is also its last, and I find myself
longing for DUCKWORTH for most of the LP. It's still solid and I like many of the tracks, but
some I would frankly skip. [car] 3.8

3.0 good | platttt | February 15th 24 | This is pretty disappointing. good kid, m.A.A.d city is a perfect album, with To Pimp A Butterfly pretty damn close, and then he drops this, an incohesive collection of singles that spoiled white girls will play in their Jeeps.

3.0 good | Tjatkinson1998 | May 27th 22 | Back in the day I loved this album, but as time has gone on my views have changed a bit. This album is still good and for the most part the theme of learning acceptance in love, the rap industry and amongst friends is done well and the run of FEAR, GOD and DUCKWORTH ends things on a high. Overall, I just feel like this does tread a bit on old ground, with less complex lyricism and an aim for mainstream appeal. This is especially the case on tracks like LOYALTY and LOVE, which while enjoyable feel not as in line with the rest of the album. Also the album feels a bit discombobulated and not as well constructed as previous K Dot projects. The production is pretty good, but nowhere near as great as previous albums and the guests are decent but don?t quite add to the album as much as GKMC or TPAB. For most rappers this would be one of their best, but for K Dot it?s still good, but nowhere near his best. Score: 7.5/10

4.0 excellent | charlopiano | December 22nd 20 | Where it feels like gkmc and TPAB were albums that Kendrick needed to do and people needed to listen to, DAMN is more an album that Kendrick wanted to make. It's much more relaxed and fun, and there's nothing wrong with that. He decided to have fun, just because he really enjoys it and that's great. Duckworth is top 5 Kendrick. There, I said it.

2.5 average | Mike | November 29th 20 | I really wanted to like this after the duo (arguably trio) of borderline incredible albums Kendrick had released. I knew deep down that he wasn't going to top To Pimp... or Good Kid... but I selfishly wanted him to keep his streak of incredible LP's alive. This makes DAMN an incredibly irritating listen due to just how uninspired it sounds throughout a large portion of its run-time.

4.0 excellent | Risodo | April 29th 18 | When "DAMN." was released, i did everything to not listen and distance myself from all the hype and all the discussion that his fans created on top of that work. I'd rather not stretch too long, but i think Kendrick Lamar is on the threshold of everything he's ever built, and "DAMN." it's like a celebration of it all, without wanting to be something more. But when we speak of such a skilled artist, that means a great deal.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | JesusCage | December 4th 17 | It's Kendrick being Kendrick and releasing another quality album, although at first it seems to lack the wholeness from the previous two releases, and the beats are a less structured and textured, which can be a con or pro depending on the listener taste (a con for me, not a major con but a con nonetheless).r(4,1)

4.0 excellent | MeetMeAtBarItalia | July 2nd 17 | Noted for its more straightforward and less narrative-driven approach, DAMN. is nonetheless an excellent modern rap record. Lamar comes through with even more poignant and somber lyrics, as he is confronted to self-doubt and contradicting values. While the record tackles big ideas and subjects with less precision and complexity than it is usually expected from Lamar, I cannot deny the rapper's impressive delivery and raw emotion. More than anything, the confusion at the center of the record makes it that much more relatable, while the production stays solid throughout.

4.0 excellent | TheManMachine | June 2nd 17 | If this is heard as a letdown it's only cuz he's spoiled us so hard with exaltedly complex concepts and nonpareil narratives. And while those are thinly tacked on here via good samaritan intro and single-word-with-period song titles and a conclusive rewind, it's the motley-n-constant killin' it and relative looseness that triumphs. Kendrick is very good and versatile and noble yes yes, let's hear it for those beatmen tho: without whom having hooks that include "sexy" and "I wanna be with you" may not be as persuasive, poppin' beside Rihanna perhaps less propulsive, bangers not so charged and NBA-adopted, "Lust." not so damn uncomfortable, the reflective ones not so damn legit, feeling like God and laughing to the bank not so damn celebratory.

4.0 excellent | cjbizzlebizzle | May 19th 17 | Damn. This pretty much solidifies Kendrick Lamar as the king of his hip hop era and one of the all time greats, if he wasn't already up there. Lamar takes a more direct approach here and drops much of the concept album stylings he has done so well in the past for a more traditional, mixtape-esque hip hop record. As usual, Kendrick presents a fantastic mixture of tracks with the intense and aggressive bangers like DNA, HUMBLE and XXX and softer songs like LOYALTY, LOVE and GOD. As usual, no matter what approach he takes, he just hits the nail on the head and makes most of the competition look silly in comparison. The argument could be made that this is his "worst" LP to date but the crazy part is when your "worst" is a contender for both best Hip Hop and best album of a given year, you know you are doing something right. Perhaps the best thing about DAMN. is the fact that the album stands on its own in terms of style when compared to all of his previous efforts. Comparing this to his more conceptual releases is just a dead end and it is refreshing to see an artist truly mix things up release to release. Kendrick has seemingly stuck to his own ideas and is a true craftsman of rap. If he releases another album that lives up to the quality of his discography, he might just be the best to ever do it but at the same time one could argue that he already is.

4.0 excellent | cavalrycaptain | April 14th 17 | Despite a lack of the cinematic vision that made TPAB so great, this is still a worthy addition to the K-Dot canon. The relative lack of guest features helps put the spotlight on Kendrick and makes the album more personal. There's also a wonderful fusion of styles ranging from current trends (the trap-pop of "LOYALTY." and "LOVE.") back to more old-school styles displayed in "HUMBLE." and "DUCKWORTH." This is definitely Kendrick's most conventional release, but it's so well-crafted that it stacks up pretty closely with his previous work.
