"Exuvia" is at times, a structural mess. It doesn't pull any punches. Verses vanish and interludes rush in to take their place without a moment's notice. The atmosphere constantly warps with very little in way of tying theme outside of some underlying scales and a desire for the mystical. Things happen, and then they don't. Even still, I can't help but think that every jarring change of pace serves its purpose exactly when needed. I am quite enraptured by "Exuvia", more so than anything the band has released since "Rain Upon The Impure", and possibly more so than anything else 2017 has to offer. This isn't an enigmatic block of mysterious perfection, nor is it an aimless slog through blackened tropes. It doesn't do everything right. However, the extent to which I am left fascinated by this record surprises me. "Exuvia" is, in my book, the very definition of interesting.

Dem beaut gothic tones are put at the service of a tribalistic blend of death, doom, and black metal whose hypnotic maelstrom pinnacles during the masterful "The Pythia's Pale Wolves".

Had to bump this up to a 4.5 eventually. Several isolated listens of this album whilst driving (mostly during night when traffic is virtually non-existent and the absence of light grows fonder), and I have to say it's confirmed my belief that The Ruins of Beverast has become one of my favourite black metal bands. Every song on this album is different from the rest, and whilst that's not saying too much given there's only six songs here, it's still a moot point.

Amazing dark, spacey Black metal with a very prominent tribal theme by Ruins of Beverast. It feels like i'm being sucked into some sacrificial ritual with soot-covered tribal people hovering around me chanting, donning wooden masks and spears.
