This reminds me of A$AP Rocky's debut tape in that it's way too wavy for the purists and prob more impressive for the beat selection than what's actually being spit. But I was surprised by how much of this I loved. Carti's flow feels like he's hit a nexus in this new wave of rappers- a grey area where verses, hooks, and ad-libs blend together into amorphous, vibey blobs. But it's mostly very pleasant and fun, and the moments where it all comes together (specifically the first 3 or 4 tracks) will inspire a horde of acolytes.

Carti's tape really is built around a couple of bangers. "Location", "Magnolia", and "wokeuplikethis*", "Flex", and "Kelly K" are all you need here as they perfectly encapsulate that typical Carti mindless vibe carried by Pi'erre Bourne cloud trap beats. The kind of dude whose "best-of" is fucking lit despite uneven records.

i rated this mixtape with a 1 last year. after listening and loving the shit out of die lit, though, i came back to this project and i gotta say, playboi carti is probably on his way to create a new sub-genre of music. what he's doing is, simply put, unlike anything else in the game. and it's great, once you find out what he's really doing.
