A simple band, a smooth sound, an awesome album. The Decemberists continue to incorporate their wide use of instruments and catchy lyrical techniques in their simple, yet highly unique music. While some tracks may fall a little short at times, this album is consistent overall and is great music for any mood. The best part of the whole album is how damn catchy it is, whether it's the broodingly simple chorus of "The Engine Driver" or the polka influenced "Mariners Revenge Song". Picaresque will entertain any indie fan, and will warm hearts within the first few minutes of the record. Great job guys.

Picaresque represents a major improvement from the rather disappointing Her Majesty. The galloping opener "The Infanta" with its magnificent keyboards and sweet mellotron notes, set the tone for a wonderful album to follow. And just where you thought that keyboards would be the dominant instrument of the album, enters "We Both Down Together" with some inspiring violin to make the result even more diverse. Superb lyricism behind some magnificent storytelling by Colin Meloy once again make this album great for a variety of moods. Recommendations: "We Both Go Down Together", "The Infanta", "The Engine Driver", "The Mariner's Revenge Song".

The Decemberists are one of my favorite bands. I love to read - real literature like Dostoevsky, not that
Twilight trash - as much as I like to listen to music, n the Decemberists have managed to combine a literary
genius with a musical one. The mariner's revenge is one of the coolest songs I know.

The Decemberists had been there or there abouts since their debut - obviously capable of writing great songs, they'd struck upon an instantly recognizable sound immediately. Surely a classic was in them somewhere? Yes it was - Picaresque. One of 2005's very best records, it's an obvious progression from 2003's disappointing Her Majesty, but it was a major improvement, packed with great songs. Their debt to Neutral Milk Hotel is still obvious, but here, they've produced a record that can rival In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. Seriously. The stars aligned perfectly for Colin Meloy's boys here, with "The Infanta", "Eli, The Barrow Boy", "Sixteen Military Wives", "The Sporting Life", and "The Engine Driver" all being worthy of consideration for the best indie-pop song ever. The next question, then - where do they go from here?
