4.0 excellent | Risodo | June 11th 18 | "I Tell A Fly" is an album that sounds like it's too out of season, and that's really cool. Much of Soul, Jazz and many Blues songs were explored by Benjamin Clementine. With all this in hand, he was able to create a Pop/Soul album that stands out for the life itself that each track presents here. There are moments of exhaustion, joy, sadness, calm and lots of fun. With a great artist like Benjamin Clementine, sound quality is always something to be expected.

4.0 excellent | Bedex | October 8th 20 | A burlesque, patchworky album that makes for a very interesting listen. This is made of invariably superb light piano sections, random harpischord bits, grooves of various origins - there is even some DnB DNA in 8 -, broadway-evoking vocals - probably my main issue with the album - and lots and lots of other elements all pieced together in a completely non linear and rather chaotic way but one that works somehow. While it is a bit of a struggle to love in its entirety given how many elements it has, especially when like me you are allergic to musicals, this is nonetheless a super fun album, full of ideas and unexpected things, and frankly a worthy listen. Main highlights were perhaps 4,6 and 9, but this is a thing to be listened in full. RIP Ted. 3.9

4.0 excellent | Erwann S. STAFF | January 21st 20 | Musically, this is one of the most adventurous records released the past decade. The elements of progressive pop, chamber jazz and even some impressionism (s/o to my homeboy Claude) reflects the sophistication of bands like Genesis, and especially their most theatrical and over-the-top records such as The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. But even though some comparisons can be made (y'know we all need some common ground), what is most striking in this album is how unique it sounds: his voice sounds like no one else, he makes use of unusual instruments (THAT THEREMIN, and that harpsichord too), and he manages to bring together elements of pop and modern classical while trying to experiment with the whole lot. A difficult album, sure, an oddity even in our current musical environment (especially when it wins a Mercury Prize), but one that slowly reveals itself to listeners patient enough to witness the blooming of a unique artist.
