I'd rate the best 5 tracks between 3.7 and 4.3. I'd rate the other 5 tracks between 2.6 and 3.4. Veil of Maya has the capacity to make inspired metal tunes that really get the blood pumping and hit just the right spot so you don't think about whatever formula was utilizing to create it. Then a lot of the stuff on here relies on kind of beginner phrasings / note patterns that doesn't really evoke nearly as strong of a visceral reaction. I wouldn't say anything on here is "bad," but some of these tracks do bore me to the point of never wanting to listen to the full album. But I'll still revisit for tracks like "Crawl Back," "Pillars," or "We Bow In It's Aura."

For Veil of Maya, their second full-length release is practically miles better than the band's debut. Much of what allows The Common Man's Collapse to be a lot less idle than the last album is the better production quality handled by The Faceless' own Michael Keene, as well as some minor improvements within the songwriting. Breakdowns are bountiful thanks to Marc Okubo, though - surprisingly enough - they don't hurt the material: at best they enhance the listening experience, while at worst they become utterly redundant.

The melodic parts of this album make it a cut above the rest of the heaps of metalcore in its time. The Common Man's Collapse has breakdowns aplenty and is by no means a perfect record. However, it's a perfect record for someone who wants to hear catchy, smart metalcore and not give a damn.

Veil of Maya bring nothing new to the table to an almost remarkable extent. Despite presenting apt musicians, a vocalist with decent range, and penchant for writing an actual good song every once in a while ("It's Not Safe to Swim Today, "We Bow In Its Aura"), they too often succumb to sounding like every other -core band that Sumerian has signed. Veil of Maya has the ingredients necessary to create an unique, interesting album but will in all likelihood continue to provide angry kids with something to mosh to.

I don't agree at all.rIt's Not Safe To Swim Today, Mark The Lines, We Bow In Its Aura and It's Torn Away are totally top notch, the very imaginative and creative riffage. Also, the chordal riffage in Mark The Lines just blew my mind away.rI loved the album from beginning to the end. The quality is also above amazing, Marc's tone is by far the very best in this era.

This album is pretty sweet when you're listening to it at the time, but it leaves absolutely no lasting impression, that's how devoid of emotion the songs on it are. Still, very cool at the time of the listening.

This album gets old fast. I heard 3 of their songs and loved them instantly. So, like a dumbass, i quickly ordered the album online. It sucks. There is an ungodly amount of breakdowns, i mean the whole album is just fucking breakdowns! There are a couple good songs on the album, but everything sounds exactly the same. If you want this album, just torrent it, it's not worth 10 bucks.

Unfortunately, I am a sucker for anything with sweeps and swift rhythm changes. I actually don't really think that this is mediocre, it's actually overall pretty okay. Theres actually like 3 or 4 great songs on here, and the rest are just average deathcore. painfully average. too bad their other shit sucks.

I almost want to call them the kings of deathcore, but I think All Shall Perish still have that title. Very refreshing to hear in such a boring genre. The long "double-breakdown" in Mark the Lines is probably the best breakdown I've ever heard. I absolutely love the feeling of urgency throughout the whole album, coupled with the instrumental tracks: Wounds, and Pillars. Can hear obvious Meshuggah influences, and influences from various melodic death metal bands such as At the Gates, and Dark Tranquillity.

This album pissed me of more than any other I've listened to. As illustrated in songs such as "It's Not Safe to Swim Today" and "We Bow In Its Aura", Veil provides 1:30 to 2 minutes of absolutely incredible material then transitions to mindless, palm muted, junk for the rest of the song. This band needs to focus on quality song writing and leave breakdowns behind.

AMAZING melodic passages, good vocals.

Amazing musicianship. I saw these guys with just one guitar playing both of the parts using a looping pedal. Breakdowns are very sweet and I love the overall intensity, song structures and technicality of the all the instruments. For a debut LP, these guys will surely be dominating the Technical Death Metal scene in North America with the next release. Up there with The Faceless and soon to be, Born of Osiris.r...BTBAM forever the greatest!

This album was so diverse, and full of everything, that it didn`t let my concentration get away not even for 1 second.
I barely enjoyed every single second of it, and I really hope that these guys will continue with the great originality that they showed on this album.
Of course, there are no MTV "hit" songs or what so ever, but they really know how to handle their instruments, & make really interesting arrangements for the songs.
For fans of All Shall Perish I guess, but mostly for all musicians, because these guys have really lots to offer, so instead of reading this review, get the album & hear for yourself !!!
