I'm a KISS fan, but I can't listen to this album. Every couple of years, I get it out and try, but they were just way off track here. I will admit that the sound quality is good and the performances are good. I really feel bad for Eric Carr who was the new drummer at the time because this album was so unlike KISS. The songwriting is just not right for the band at all. I do have a new appreciation for the song "A World Without Heroes" after hearing the band "October Layne" perform their version of the song on the "Dressed to Thrill" Tribute CD. Aside from that, I don't like any of the songs on this one. I think this is the worst KISS album and the only reason that I don't give it a 1 is I do think the sound quality and performances are good despite the poor songwriting.

Under the Rose is fantastic. Almost Game of Thrones type of song. The World Without Heroes is great as well, even though it?s not typical KISS. The album is slightly unbalanced. Half of it?s really good and the ither half are forgettable.

Rumor has it that this album sucks, seemingly just as much as the daft fans of the genre of which is differs. Jesus Christ, there are some great stuff on this album and one just has to ignore the fact that it was crafted by four people that goes under the name of "the hottest band in the world", which obviously speaks for itself!

Nowhere near as bad as people would have you believe. Being a life long Kiss fan I stayed away from this one just because of the horror stories I heard. Maybe that's the reason I was expecting a heaping pile of shit and what I got was actually listenable. This is Kiss trying to prove they have artistic merit and can write a song that's not about suckin and fuckin. Needless to say some of the tracks are terrible (under the rose, mr. blackwell) but there are some true hard rocking gems to be found as well (The Oath, I, Dark Light, Escape from the Island). This would be the last album Kiss would release that would alienate their fans before turning things around with their next hard rocking record, Creatures of the Night.

Not as bad as rumour has it. I and The Oath are two great rocking tunes. Just a Boy and A World Without Heroes are quite decent ballads, which fare much better than the godawful Shandi on Unmasked. Surely, there are a lot of substandard numbers, but in my opinion it's a little step up from the pop hell into which they had descended on their previous two albums. Could have done with a heavier production, though. Just listen to covers of The Oath by Snowy Shaw and Sack Trick.

This... This is Kiss's worst album. Kiss had been going bad for a while, but this is Kiss going to the cess pool in a new, scary direction. The crap music just got a whole lot more terrible.
