It seems as if, no matter what style he employs, that Flying Lotus creates some of the most textured, intelligent, and engaging electronic music that always has layer upon layer of wonderful sounds to peel back every album. There are plenty of subgenres explored on Los Angeles, including trip-hop, wonky, IDM, instrumental hip-hop, and even glitch-hop. It's a very urban record, not unlike Burial's full-lengths, but the difference here is a rather relaxed, playful sentiment rather than a detached and paranoid one. Things are constantly swirling around in the space-like atmosphere, whether they be the kick drums you can feel in your bones on "Breathe Something/Stellar Star", the tribal drums of "Melt!", the simple and smooth guitar on "Riot", or the beautiful vocals on "Roberta Flack". In a nutshell, FlyLo's second full-length is a unique and refreshing take on trip-hop, as well as other aforementioned genres, that shouldn't be missed by fans of electronic music or fans of beat-driven music in general.

In my opinion the best beat album, each track is stuffed with fantastic sounds and great rhythms. The track flow creates a cohesive album which flows with a noir atmosphere. Flyo succeeded in showing us his vision of Los Angeles

This is probably the most I've ever enjoyed FlyLo's music, but it still doesn't do it for me like I feel it should. This is so homogeneous that it hurts, devoting its runtime to running by as smoothly as possible. And I can totally respect that-- at least all the variation here makes sense, which I'm not sure I can say about Steven Ellison's latest work. Despite Los Angeles' strengths, though, it doesn't seem to want to function as anything more than background music-- which kills me, because there's some fun shit far in between. It's just that by the time the album picks up, it's just too late... Maybe I should take it as a sign this guy's music simply isn't for me.

I liked this a lot at first, but on repeated listens it didn't quite live up to it's initial luster. The production is very flat, and overly loud. Some of the songs sound like sophomoric experiments, just throwing in cool sounding samples with non-reckless abandon. That said, it was a great introduction to this artist, and it's very unique and original, even if this has been done before.

Shifting away from his more minimal approach with "1983" Flying Lotus showcases a lot more variety on his newest offering, "Los Angeles." Although the album is often tagged as instrumental hip-hop every song has a unique set of beats matched with Ellison's lush keyboard arrangements and organic production. The pulsing, hypnotic variety of beats never wears thin making "Los Angeles" a zany and trance-inducing listen.

A departure in a certain sonic way from his more hip hop offerings, this newer music is definitely a trip showing that Flylo has got a lot more to put forward in his evolution as an artist in the future. His groove is still inherent but it's all layered in heavy emotive sampled textures under heavily compressed sparkling production.
