Eonian is a new era for the band (or maybe a final goodbye with as long as it takes for them to release albums). The guys behind Dimmu Borgir are married with families, and have definitely mellowed out. This isn't the balls-out black metal of their peak. Instead Eonian is a very nmelodic style album that shares more than a little bit of influences with bands such as Epica... including an abundance of choirs. That's not to say there's isn't a black metal undercurrent (and black metal vocals) running throughout the album, because the black metal is definitely there but it shares time with a huge amount of melody, choirs, and different tempos.

Symphonic singalong Nightwishian black metal, or something that's striving to be that. The problem is that Dimmu don't seem to know how to keep up the energy to make whole songs sound like that, so some songs have the cool choruses, some have riffs that are actually interesting, and some have neither. I think that "Interdimensional Summit" is about the closest they get on "Eonian" to writing a consistent song in this vein, given it sort of sounds like Dimmu Borgir but with all the cheesy symphonic oomph of Nightwish. It's better than Abrahadabra maybe, but only because that album was degenerative trash.

What makes Eonian so frustrating is that there is some genuinely good material strewn between the rorchestral pomp and cheesy posturing. I think it's better than Abrahadabra, and it does feel rslightly more black metal (as promised), but it's pretty clear that Dimmu has lost sight of their rroots and is more content as a money-hungry symphonic caricature of a black metal group than a rband that actually cares about creating quality content.
