To date, the sharpest and most compelling metalcore album I've ever listened to. 10 years after its release, its sweeps and riffs still pack a powerful punch. Just an extraordinarily well-paced album with superb song structure, especially compared to its peers.

Darkest Hour is a decent place to start for the simple side of melodic death metal. Although they suffer from too many riff cliches and boring vocals, they actually do some very interesting stuff on this album, like the tracks "Pathos" and "Ethos". Not great, but they have potential.

Children of Bodom vocals plus In Flames riffs plus American metalcore equals Darkest Hour. It's essentially an American take on melodic death metal, with all the NWOAHM-core flare you'd expect from such a band in 2005. Fortunately for Darkest Hour, they don't lean too far into the metalcore sound beyond a little riffing here or gang vocals there, completely avoiding the pitfalls of the genre.
