This album took the idea of space within music and crafted a set of songs that actually convey depth: you actually hear where an instrument is playing in the soundscape rather than just what it's playing.

The songs all have some good elements, and the band definitely shows that they at least have some musical skill. The music is very guitar-driven, and they show their creativity with myriads of little variations on the same riffs. Unfortunately, each song doesn't usually vary too much from a couple of dominant riffs with their little variations. There are no vocals, which works for the band, as the music alone is very atmospheric and sounds complete by itself. However, the songs are all way too long. Some take a while to get going, some drag on in the middle, some have overextended endings...regardless, there are often times when you wish a song would end, or you wish they would have decided to cram less into a song. All in all, this album presents a lot of good and pleasing material, but simply way too much filler and way too much repetition.

I blame my late exposure to Pelican and simultaneous overexposure to post-metal in general for the overall lack of interest for this album and certainly for my being so unimpressed.

Pelican effortlessly craft an instrumental journey through multiple seasons on their sophpmore album The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw. The album Starts off in the cold calm atmosphere of winter with the dense opener Last Day of Winter and works its way backwards to the first day of spring with the warmth of the closer Sirius. The Fire In Our Throats sees Pelican start to experiment a little bit by adding some acoustic guitars into thee mix and creating more atmospheric leaning music in general. All in all Pelican easily accomplishes the journey they set out to complete and surpass it despite dragging a little bit in the middle. Best Tracks:Last Day of Winter, Autumn into Summer, and Sirius.

I don't think I'll ever forget listening to this album for the first time in high school after trying salvia, also for the first time. For about 5 minutes, I felt like I had a spiritual awakening, going to places in my mind I had never seen before or since. Then I realized the first song wasn't even finished and got something to eat.

It's too bad the mainstream metal world's mouth has been crammed so full of Isis's worm infested dick. Pelican do it twice as well, and they don't need the viagra either. Instead of the overly simple erect/flaccid dynamic utilized by so many bands of this ilk, Pelican opt for a more sweeping and complete sound, rarely wasting time on a buildup. Instead, they keep the listener entertained with a constantly shifting and evolving groove. I really like this, much more than I expected I would.
