The album is named after the Ouroboros symbol, which is a dragon or snake figure depicted in full circle consuming itself. This represents continuity and the cycle of power, emphasizing the theme of reincarnation, an idea propagated heavily by the band during promotion. Melding eastern with western sounds feels like a hard thing to do, yet our Japanese friends Dir En Grey have perfected this style. A lot of world instruments were utilized, and still doesn't sound overwhelming. This is possibly one of the best albums ever made by a very innovative band.

(8/29/18): Can one remember the progressive/avant-garde leanings of the two records which came after Gauze? Well, with Dir En Grey's seventh studio outing Uroboros, that sort of sound was given a modern revival - albeit in a distinctly different, way more refined fashion than ever before. Combine this with the raw ferocity of the past album alongside a plethora of other new tricks and you've got what plenty a folk have considered (*and* still call) the band's crowning jewel. A sound-off like the one I've written does no justice to the level of songwriting, musicianship, and track ordering present. Mainly because of the flat-meets-super muddy mix thanks to the polarizing Ted Jensen, the original version proved inferior to the Remastered & Expanded Edition, yet Uroboros was fantastic nevertheless. Not only does this still remain as my #1 favorite Diru release, it even functions as one of my all-time personal favorite albums that emerged from the industry period.

Dir En Grey completely outdid themselves here. This is an album beyond comparison. One can simply see this when looking at (proper) opening track Vinushka, a NINE-MINUTE opus that takes in every genre the band has played thus far, and transforms it into an outburst of excellent musicianship and emotion. The band have also finally worked out how to mix their Western and Eastern influences perfectly; notice how the band frequently go from brutal metacore freakouts to heavily Visual Kei-esque choruses. That's one thing to also note; how utterly brutal the band have become, not only in terms of heaviness, but in emotional power. The main reason for this is Kyo; even in the tracks he sings in English (Glass Skin and Dozing Green), he is still completely unintelligible. But either when he's singing at a range so high it seems impossible, or freakishly shrieking like a caged animal, every single note that pours out of his mouth sounds utterly devastating. To put it simply, Kyo is one of the most talented singers in ANY genre of ALL time. From it's perfect musicianship, dark atmosphere, wide influences and sheer diversity, I can safely say Uroboros is one of THE finest metal albums of the decade. And I am saying that as one uneducated in metal, with utter confidence. Hats off to you, Dir En Grey. Hats off to you.

This Album is amazing in the fact that they are all very accomplished musicians, and the album seems whole. There are no loose ends, everything is tied perfectly together, and i can't make out a single thing they could have done different.
This is the best album this year without a doubt, however, there is something preventing me from giving it a 5, which i can't explain. (though it probably deserves one...)

I pre-ordered this in early August hoping for it to be better than Marrow of a Bone, which isn't bad, but not the bands best. I was hoping for a more Kisou/Macabre based sound as far as being experimental, and that's exactly what I got, only better. This album is substantially heavier than MoaB, but in a more Progressive Metal way, and maybe a touch of Death Metal. Kyo has the deepest growls he has ever done, and the highest shrieks. Easily the best album since Kisou.

Dir en grey really grew from album to album and this is just now the peak of their achievements. Uroborus may be a little tough to listen to for the first time but after every new listening it grows on you. Superb work
