Program music that relies heavily on ambience to accompany the lyrical content fails when
said ambience is dated and unmemorable. Remove Cave's voice, and few would care for this
shapeless ambient pop album that lacks strong melodies. The title track is an overlong
rehash of New Age/Ambient/Electronic tropes that have long been expanded upon since the
heydays of Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and Schulze. This is about as interesting as the New
M83 album which is another example of shallow revivalism. Unlike M83 though, Nick Cave is
really cool. Music journalists will eat this up and herald it as another masterpiece.
2.87/10 - Only recommended to his most loyal fans

The band follow their masterpiece Skeleton Tree with a less dark direction, even more sparse and ethereal than their previous work has been this past decade. This is practically a full on ambient album, often being not much more than synths and piano alongside Cave's voice. His lyrics continue to be wonderfully impressionistic, ranging from the surreal and fantastical to some very intimate and personal musings as well. It's not quite as consistently engaging as Abattoir Blues, ...Sky, or Skeleton Tree but is another triumph and one of the finest albums of the year. Highlights include "Bright Horses" "Sun Forest" "Galleon Ship" "Leviathan".

horribly bloated, and not at all adventurous musically. the two long form tracks on LP2 are just bad. that being said, the good parts of this, like Galleon Ship and Fireflies, are fantastic. doesn't trump Skeleton Tree as their venture into electronics, and is nowhere near the quality of Orpheus/Abattoir as a double album. Though the praise was to be expected, seeing as how this site loves jacking off to limp, lifeless synth music.

By no means perfect, for its flaws are too bluntly apparent, but a stunning work nonetheless presenting the themes started in 'Skeleton Tree' in a more pragmatic and often optimistic light. A beautiful album for (successfully) coping.

I want to like this, I really do. After falling in love with Cave's music I was certain I would. But this album....I mean I can kinda get it? It's very lush and emotionally heavy, however, there is nothing there instrumentally. Take away Cave's vocals and you have a fairly unremarkable ambient record.

Nick Cave could tell us, sing for us, shout out his pain and sorrows on 1 million pieces that he would still have the strength to touch us every time deep inside ourselves. This third part is so beautifully cold and sad, but proves once again that Nick Cave and his band are able to offer us a magnificent album, whose level of writing, the direction is so similar to a cinematographic work that the images will automatically come to mind with every word, every sound
