3.0 good | cjbizzlebizzle | May 28th 20 | First off, the positives. Grimes' touch with production, beat intricacies/textures, atmosphere and putting her own personal stylistic stamp on music is well and present and while not good as ever, still very strong on Miss Anthropocene. There really is a lot to appreciate with what she is able to do with the electronics here and throughout here entire discography. What makes this record feel like a step down? It is just lethargic and the songs aren't as dynamic and fail to develop like the best Grimes tracks do. One example of this is 'Darkseid' where you have a great bass backdrop and an immersive atmosphere but almost nothing happens beyond that. This can be said of the opening track too, it feels like a mistake to open the record with 'So Heavy...'. '4AEM', 'Violence' and 'My Name Is Dark' represent a great stretch in the middle of the record but outside of that none of the tracks are worth revisiting long term. Where the self-proclaimed "piece of crap" 'Art Angels' was dynamic, endlessly energetic and addictive while still retaining the intricate production elements Grimes is a genius with, 'Miss Anthropocene' feels lethargic for the most part with just a few memorable peaks.

3.5 great | Trey STAFF | January 13th 23 | Weird atmospheric electronic music that straddles the line between ambient, dream pop, and electro-pop. I love the layers of vocals and synths, as well as all the twisted effects that are added to everything. The whole thing is anchored by creative, yet chill, beats and just enough pop influence to keep everything memorable.

3.0 good | BlitzPhoenix98 | August 18th 20 | Meh. Most of the material here feels lifeless and half-hearted, despite looking pretty on the outside. Already from the first track you can tell there was no real effort put into this which is rather a shame coming off from the incredibly addictive Art Angels.

3.0 good | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | June 13th 20 | She learnt how to make her art just obnoxious enough to be ridiculous, but not enough to be grating. Some track highlights here and there, but the main fault is that the album is all over the place. No clear direction, no distinct motif or arc, barely any substance either. Just decent enough songs to keep you hooked.

3.5 great | SinNanna | May 17th 20 | Grimes long awaited album, coming in hot after what is easily the most hectic and controversial period of her career, has simultaneously pleased and dissapointed me. On one hand I think there are a handful of standout cuts which to me are some of her best to date like Forever, My Name Is Dark (whose unapologetically edgy lyrics admittedly are a bit hard to take serious in places), 4AM and New Gods, but the tracklist sadly is not excempt from noticeably weaker cuts as well like You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around and Violence. Stylistically Miss Anthropocene has the tendency to go all over the place, more so than any other Grimes album, jumping from gothed out, soaring alt metal and breakbeats to folk or ambient infused pop and synthesizer balladry, making for a record that is as ambitious as it is inconsistent. Conceptually I can't help but feel like the whole "global warming/end of the world" theme has been greatly oversold by Grimes on her social media, as apart from making some allusions to it like on New Gods this album just kinda reads more like a sadder, more personal record, largely inspired by the events of the preceding years in her career and personal life. I frankly don't think this record was worth all the drama that it created in that regard. Still, I'll say that with Miss Anthropocene Grimes has delivered a pop record that is pretty enjoyable overall, as none of the songs here to me read as truly awful, and at 10 tracks it doesn't overstay its welcome too long either.

4.5 superb | yungalb | March 2nd 20 | Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. It had a a much darker feel to it then I expected. Best songs are Violence, 4AEM and We Appreciate Power.

3.5 great | Erwann S. STAFF | February 21st 20 | As ethereal as we could expect, and less flowing than previous records: the tracks are more clearly separated and more distinctive too. This make a clear distinction between awesome tracks (Violence or Delete Forever for example) and really not good ones (Darkseid is shitty). At least this variety of sound is refreshing, as the album navigates between ethereal wave, guitar-led pop, 90s dnb, synthpop and dancey bops. Despite having a deliberate pop feeling, this is dark and minimalist af, and even the livelier tracks (4AM), while energetic, do not uplift the listener. What's also weird is how deconstructed the whole lot feels, especially given the time Boucher took to release this. Weird release day, but a good one for sure.
