This is the best thing he's done since Echoes of Silence, and with more listens it might beat that. In Your Eyes, After Hours, Hardest To Love, Faith, and Blinding Lights are absolutely stunning. Plus Daniel Lopatin is on two songs, so it's cool to like this even if you're not a pop fan.

The Weeknd going synth? Hell yas, it brings a whole new futuristic vibe to his music, while ofc reminiscing the 80s. Small aside, the decade's influence on these past 10 years is astounding, and it's quite amazing it helped shape a sound both deeply rooted in the past as well as designed for the future. In my very humble opinion, the production might be the best he's ever sung on, plus it's a good recap of his career: it has his albums' poppiness and his EPs' dimness. So yup, it's one hell of a pop record. Gotta agree with Doof tho, his vocals are always the same. Still, I did not expect to be this thrilled with Abel's newest album.

First half is a solid 4.2, but second half falters a bit despite a fun synthpop twist, and overextends a tiny bit too. Still feels like his magnum opus so far where he magnifies his style, and the album is a nice summary of his musical 2010's decade as a way to open the 2020's. Opener's very nice, then 2 is a big jam with its bouncy, burialesque almost prod. 3 follows with a dnb prod, 4 feeling more like regular The Weeknd and the first weaker/gnangnan track. But already we see the variety on display here. 5 is a kinda jam with nice bounce, and I love the ambient-esque prod on 6. The intro is jammy but the track feels a touch too long. 7 is a harder hitting trap track (but still with his vox), and it is another hard jam. The record then takes a turn and moves into its weaker 2nd act. 8 feels a bit much. 9-11 then take us on a synthpop trip, and while they're all nice, especially the overall better 10 with its fantastic, sax-led conclusion, they fail to bring the record back up imo. 12 ends the synthpop phase and brings back the eerier electronica style of the early record, but minus a lot of the energy it had. Does help with the album length though, because at this point it is starting to feel long indeed. 13 brings the energy back and is really nice, but it was about time the album ended, and while 14 is niec it feels outright unnecessary. Well done man. 4.0

I enjoy this album quite a bit, except some minor issues. The vocals on the first two tracks are mixed so badly, I am actually surprised it went through like this. Further, there are some songs in the tracklist that drag out a bit, with lyrics I find too unrelatable to care. However there are many highlights here as well, where the popularity may be justified.

A return to form for Abel, with the 80s sound really matching his delivery and content. The talk of his love for a girl and the trials and tribulations of this relationship and trying to get over it by fucking around, feels a lot more cohesive than previous albums which felt less connected. The mixture of genres ranging from liquid dnb to the U.K. drill influence of the last track was really cool and helped make this album sound fresh and new. Bar a few meh tracks, this is a great listen and the best LP from the Weeknd since House of Ballloons. 8/10

Credit where it's due, Weeknd's song-writing is much sharper than before. On the other hand, his lyricism can be unintentionally risible and his falsetto becomes kind of irksome after almost an hour of this album. But maybe that's just my problem with falsettos.

Not going to lie Starboy, BBtM, and Kiss Land are not my favorite records and the Weeknd still has some of the same issues here as he has always had: lack of diversity. However, he is finally putting himself on the path towards success with this new record and for the most part, I?m loving it.

sharp production. perfects everything sound and theme the weeknd has covered through his entire rdiscography with a dollop of 80s nostalgia. i can hear influences of tears for fears (in your reyes), michael jackson (scared to live), depeche mode (faith). hell, even the synths on snowchild rremind me of james blake's self-titled/ep days. save your tears is a genuine mellow banger, and rthe title track is one of the best songs of the year so far.rthe lyrics are much more introspective now. though there is his usual fare of hedonism, he delves rinto matters more personally than on previous efforts. however, his singing can get a bit mundane. rthe intro track is slightly underwhelming though i like the two parts of the song production-wise. rvery good album otherwise, his most cohesive and focused effort since trilogy.
