Childish Gambino continues to overcompensate for his complete lack of musical identity with
a cheap, shamelessly gaudy, overtly ~childish~, and entirely directionless "more-is-more"
approach to draining every last drop of blood from the looted corpse of contemporary R&B. A
true necrophiliac of genres.

E X P E R I M E N T A L. Donald is collaging plenty of r&B/soul stuff he recorded. While I laud the attempt, I think the potential it's showing here is not on par with the delivery. Variety is present for sure, My fave bit here is 42.26, and it was released 2 years ago as Feels Like Summer and its gorgeous video. I almost feel a kind of Kanye breakdown here: releasing a deliberately complicated album, with some a r t thrown in here. For example, the album title and cover, which are not really arty or avant-garde whatsoever: it honestly just feels half-assed. Shame, 'cause the good moments here (first two tracks and the closer for example) are indeed appreciable, but the bulk of the album does not appeal to me. It's not unlikeable tho.

Donald Glover is one of my idols. He has been able to dominate every single area of the pop-culture and I find that amazing. But as much as i respect the guy, I've never totally been into his music. Because The Internet was a mess trying to be GKMC, Awaken My Love was weirdly mediocre, this was a concept album that I did not get into, I can't really understand the point, so it really didn't have much of an impact to me. I truly don't know where the man is headed, but even though I love some of his work, I can't really be behind it.

I think I want to like CG, but as much as I
try, his stuff just goes nowhere. This is
very self-indulgent, and it seems fitting that
the song names are timestamps, as they sound
like placeholders.

I am starting to suspect that 'Awaken, My Love' was an accidental moment of genius in Gambino's career. Everything prior was empty in character and hit or miss in execution. But AML was gorgeous, catchy, otherworldly. And now, suddenly, the new record is back to that vapid, milquetoast atmosphere that made his hip-hop records so unbearable. Except now it does not even offer any variety in sound or songwriting. It is a minimum-album, not minimalist. It is too much of too little.

I have always been a passive listener of Donald?s music. I have never truly understood his massive success, but he has always produced amazing songs, but subpar records. This is no different. Some amazing songs here, but some true head-scratchers.
