4.5 superb | billybacksplat | May 13th 09 | I have been a fan of TDWP from the beginning and I’ve watched their progression, and it is amazing. From the simple yet brutal rifts of Dear Love, to the simple taps of Plagues, and now the masterful With Roots Above and Branches Below. Their newest album takes you on a roller coaster of blast beats and heavy rifts. Pure Amazingnesssss.
1. The album jump starts with Sassafras a fast paced song that thrives on the deep growls of lead vocalist Mike Hranica. Usually Mike’s deep screams are short in supply, but in this song he gets the mosh-pit going with his screams. The synth in this song comes in and blows you away while you think “it’s not all about the numbers” Jeremy’s singing in this song puts it over the top. Great start up track. 4/5
2. The next track I Hate Buffering picks right up where Sassafras left off with mikes harsh screams and the double bass pedal stomping loudly. This track is magnified by Dan Williams’ drums and James Baney’s Synth work. The Epic feel of the synth is amazing with mikes signature screams leading the way. This track is worth a listen. 4/5
3. After following the two intro tracks, Assistant to the Regional Manager really shows the progression of TDWP. This track is very well structured with repeating parts and the brutal breakdown at the end. It starts out with soft guitar with turns into passionate screaming. This song has three specific parts that will blow you away, one being when Jeremy comes in with the clean vocals. His singing perfectly corresponds to the synth. The second comes when mike screams one word over and over again, “RUMORS AND RUMORS AND ...RUMORS” The synth in the back ground gives you a chill when you hear it. The final piece to this amazing song is the breakdown! Mike screams correspond to the guitars and make metalcore magic. 5/5
4. The next track and lead single is Dez Moines. This song thrives on fast paced guitar and great singing by Jeremy. This song makes you want to scream along to Mike’s catchy chorus. And this song lets you know “This is the time for weakness, this is the time for blood” 4/5
5. Big Wiggly Style really gets the pit moving! The beginning of this song does it for me with the intro like guitar thudding.. I could give it a 5 out of 5 just for that. But then once Mike leads the way with his amazing vocals, and the drums and guitar are brilliant. It doesn’t quite live up to its beginning but still a solid track. 4/5
6. Next is Danger: Wildman, the first time I listened to the album this song stuck out to me the most. This song has it all, great screams, brutal breakdowns, amazing singing, a synth interlude, and one of the best guitar rifts on the album! This track I recommend to any hardcore, metalcore, metal, screamo fan out there. It will blow you away!!! 5/5
7. Then comes one of the kids favorites Ben has a Kid. This track starts out with an open guitar rift which quickly ignites into an epic of a song. The chorus sang by Jeremy will want him to make a solo project. Its really that good. The best part of this song is the breakdown near the end. Mikes pulls out his “DOI” Scream again to get the breakdown going. We all know the slower the breakdown, the more brutal, and this is one slow breakdown. And right after the breakdown, a guitar rift comes in that will give you chills as it leads into Jeremy’s heavenly singing. 4.5/5
8. Here comes one of the heaviest tracks on the album, Wapakalypse, the intense guitar at the beginning gets it going, perfectly complimented by the synth. This track once again shows you Prada’s progression as musicians. Great Track! 4/5
9. Now it is time for the unsung hero of the album, Gimme half. This is probably my favorite song on the album, and this is for one reason only. The best 30 seconds of music that TDWP ever written lies within the 2:30-3:00 mark of the song. It will amaze you. The guitar and the deep screams and the double bass “roll” sooooo good! 5/5
10. Remember when I said you would wish Jeremy had a solo project, well Louder than Thunder, gives you a small taste. A soft ballad with beautiful singing.4/5
11. Finally this epics final chapter, Lord Xenu, This track opens up with a harsh scream, and doesn’t let go. The singing in this track is superb. And this track is fitting ended to such a amazing album. 4/5

4.5 superb | godiseverywhere | August 30th 09 | I loved this album. I've heard a lot of poeple complain about the vocals. While Mike Hranica doesn't go as high in his screams as he did in Plagues, his mid-ranged yell makes a good substitute. Also, Jeremy Depoyster has really improved his clean vocals.
Now, on to the rest of the band. Everything has improved. The guitars now have a certain crispness to them that I missed in Plagues and Dear Love: a Beautiful Discord. The drums are constantly changing tempo, and sometimes it's hard to keep up. Overall, everything has improved.
Now the negative points. This album left me wanting more. I just wish they could have put one more song on the record. Another point is that , while the vocals are good, I wish Mike would have chosen better placement of his low-pitched growl. For example, in "Dez Moines", when he says "Take all your medals", he sounds a bit dumb. Also in "Dez Moines", he says "Take all your ribbons", and he sounds out of breath. Now individual song reviews.
01- "Sassafrass"- I really like the intensity of this song. The transitions are great, and are timed perfectly. 4/5
02- "I Hate Buffering"- Again, very intense. This one feels a little more structured, and not as frantic as "Sassafrass". I like this song's melodic feel towards the end.4.5/5
03- "Assistant to the Regional Manager"- ........This song BLEW ME AWAY. Remarkably catchy, but also very exciting to listen to. The guitar is exceptional in this one.Great breakdown at the end.4.5/5
04- "Dez Moines"- Jeremy's voice is up-front-and-center here. My only complaint is that Mike could have place his vocal transitions better.3.5/5
05- "Big Wiggly Style"- The synth plays an interesting part in this song, but feels a bit tacked-on at certain moments. However, I loved this song, and it is one of my favorites. Really good breakdowns. Really good vocals. Really good everything.4/5
06- "Danger: Wildman"- Very heavy song with some of the best vocals on the entire album. Everything feels right at home. There is even a part that almost has a Guitar vs. Keyboard feel to it. The bridge is great. Overall, great song.4.5/5
07- "Ben Has a Kid"- One of the most brutal tracks this band has ever put out. Almost 2 minutes in, an extremely heavy breakdown kicks you in your face, and Mike shows you how low he can go. Very heavy song.4.5/5
08- "Wapakalypse"- Again, extremely heavy, but leaves a bit to be desired.3.5/5
09- "Gimme Half"- I LOVE THIS SONG. Perfect mix of melody and brutality. Great vocals. Great guitars. Great drums. GREAT SONG.My favorite from the whole album.5/5
10- "Louder Than Thunder"- This song surprised me. I didn't know what to expect when I heard that The Devil Wears Prada made a ballad. I'll tell you now, I didn't even miss the fact that Mike isn't even in the song. Jeremy has the full stage, and he makes the best of it.5/5
11- "Lord Xenu"- This song felt like it was tacked on just to have another song to play at live shows. It was okay, but I would've been just fine without it.3/5
In summary, this record is great. It puts Plagues to shame (even though Plagues was great, too). Pick it up whenever you can. I doubt you'll regret it.

4.0 excellent | MattRTS | May 9th 09 | I'm probably overrating it a bit, but honestly this is a huge improvement since Plagues. Sure, it's not original or anything new, but it's a great album. Vocals, especially clean vocals, are great as always and the album has a more synth-ish feel, which is a good thing.

2.5 average | upagainstthewall | April 25th 09 | The Devil Wears Prada (TDWP) have at last done something well. Created a good album, that is average on scale to any other band. TDWP have followed the same simple generic formula, since breaking new ground seems to scary a task for a christian bias metalcore band, though at least they have got rid of all the things that made the last album horrible. But they still persist with stupid song title names such as 'Big Wiggly Style' and 'I Hate Buffering.' To borrow a line, these guys are just so good at being mediocre.

AUTO TUNE!!! YAY!!! This album is painful and plain. Hate it. Hate those faggots who walk around and think that they 'know metal' because they listen to this pathetic bullshit. Please, this is panzy metal.

3.5 great | DANGERwildMATT | October 29th 09 | So they went for the more 'commercial' route. That's cool. But I'd respect it more if they didn't keep blatantly denying it in interviews. That aside, this was REALLY well written, really well produced, but you can't follow something as raw and groundbreaking as Plagues with this and expect people not to complain a little ;)

2.0 poor | Klekticist | July 11th 09 | TDWP is a perfect example of an over-hyped scene-core band. Boring and derivative as always

2.5 average | raggedragamuffin | July 10th 09 | Can anyone really tell these songs apart? Consistently mediocre, this album is much less than I had hoped for. There are bright spots whenever there is clean singing, and these moments are a highlight of several song. Unfortunately, this is not showcased enough on this CD and cannot make up for the poor singing and mediocre musicianship of the rest of the album.

0.0 | Motiv3 | April 30th 09 | this is not a terrible album by any means, its painfully average, which at times is worse, particularly seeing as the clean vocals are pretty pleasant, unfortunately TDWP fall into the trap of mediocre breakdowns and the same song structure over and over which brings nothing new to the genre. They could of exploited the synth and keyboards to add more atmosphere but it adds nothing to the music. Dissappointing in some ways but not in others seeing the reputation they have at the moment.

2.0 poor | thejared | April 24th 09 | Boring rehashed "whatever you will call it core" that blends together from song to song never truly sticking out in the boring crowded genre they will be forced to suck the tit of for the rest of there lives.

4.0 excellent | davezillaMP3 | July 5th 20 | This album took what made plagues enjoyable and really refined it to make one hell of a fantastic record, I would love to give this a 4.5, heck I would love to give it a 5, but the album should have ended with "Louder than thunder", "Lord Xeno" is the worst song on here, and might be one of the bands weaker songs in their whole catalog.
Bump |
2.0 poor | zaruyache | January 15th 17 | production sucks, guitars lack power, general songwriting isn't good, transitions between harsh and clean vocals are often sudden and awkward, and the power choruses feel like they were intended to be the backbone of the record, without actually being the backbone of the songs in which they appear. It's just an uninteresting mess.

3.0 good | ayylmao | October 13th 15 | God-awful (pun-intended) harsh vox.
Generic, predictable cleans.
Generic and repetitive breakdowns.
Preachy af lyrics, cringeworthy at times.
Some cool melodies here and there.
Outstanding synth parts and catchy electronic breakdowns.
Shows promise but ultimately still disappointing.

0.0 | | March 15th 12 | By still relying on mediocre songwriting, unnecessary electronic input and detestable harsh vocals, The Devil Wears Prada did not learn from the downfalls of their previous album, and have instead continued to rely on such traits to push their sound forward, losing any progression in the process.

4.5 superb | IAmKickass | April 28th 11 | A turning point for The Devil Wears Prada, 'With Roots Above' is a fantastic album showing that the band is capable of doing more than random vocal points and senseless breakdowns, that they can craft an album that impresses on all stages and shows maturity for the band.

5.0 classic | tdwp271 | March 14th 10 | The Devil Wears Prada continues to amaze me. Every album they release blows me away, and they continue to do so with this one. Mike's vocals are more refined this time around. He has tremendous range, and has really been dedicated to his work. If you ever watch an interview with Prada, you will see that they honestly care about what they do. This album does not have as many breakdowns as their previous works, and they add more choruses in, but it is great nevertheless. I don't understand why everyone on this site has been hating on TDWP constantly. People say they're generic? The vocals are atrocious? Is that why With Roots Above and Branches Below made it all the way to #11 on the billboard 200? Yeah, not the billboard 200 for metalcore music, I mean the billboard 200 for all genres of music. That is unheralded in this genre, and they deserve a lot of credit. If you really think The Devil Wears Prada is terrible, try going to one of their shows. You will be blown away. If you haven't listened to this album, just give it a try. Don't listen to all the haters that have absolutely nothing good to say about one of the most popular bands out there.

3.5 great | IamInExile | January 7th 10 | Don't be fooled by the name of this band, these 6 guys from tdwp knows how to make some heavy music. The first song I heard by them was "Danger : Wildman", it's an amazing song with lots of screaming(also low growls) and Jeremy Depoyster delivers the chorus with he's beautiful clean vocals. The song hooked me instantly and I must say the rest of the songs certainly is up there with the same quality as "Danger : Wildman". This is certainly metalcore, and with so many metalcore bands out there sounding the same it pleases me to hear that Tdwp doesn't sound like anyone else. rThey, along with Underoath and August Burns Red, are a christian band. You can see it in the lyrics of most of the songs, they always have some kind of message for the listener. If your not a Christian it doesn't mean you won't enjoy this album. The drummer, Daniel Williams, really shines on this album with some great drumming, with the use of the double bass pedals. The guitar work on the album is not that special, but it fits well with the music. The keyboards give the songs something special, and it's not overused.

0.0 | Countorus | July 10th 09 | One of the most overrated bands in metalcore decide to its cool to release one of the most terrible albums of 2009. Yes, the band is practically the poster band for clean/scream, verse/chorus/verse/chorus/breakdown/chorus craze which is currently sweeping the listeners of 'metal'. Although I seen their past releases somewhat enjoyable; this is just plain awful. For one, the vocals on it are completely atrocious and the clean vocals get very annoying at times. The song writing and structure is mediocre and theres nothing really else to say. There may be hope for this band, but I am extremely skeptical. I'm j/k there is no hope.

3.0 good | forshoredividesusger | June 20th 09 | Somehow this album grew on my while listening to it in my car. Everything on this is fairly generic and average. There's no real progression to be seen from Plagues. Same old chug-chug breakdowns, repetitive screams and boyish cleans backboned by synth- and keyboard-sounds. Still i kinda like it now, there's some undeniable catchiness in there.
Bump |
3.0 good | BigTuna | May 18th 09 | This album and band have received a lot of heat. But this album shows such maturity and advancement from their last two. The vocals are raw and improved, the guitar work is more intricate, and the drumming, while not spectacular, keeps pace wonderfully. Also, Hranica is a great, great lyricist. TDWP is definitely getting better.
Bump |
3.0 good | c0nf1n3d | May 11th 09 | I really like this album, I really do. But I don't think its fair that I give it a 4 or a 5, even an 3.5. I usually give albums really high reviews...more than what they deserve...but this album? It sounds exactly the same as every song from Plagues, and it has the same songwriting formulas and progressions within each song. If anything, "Ben Has a Kid", "Dez Moines," "Big Wiggly Style", or "Louder Than Thunder" have memorable moments on the album. There isn't a 'hook' in the album, there isn't a 'standout track', it all sounds the same, and you can easily forget parts of a song, you'll basically remember the beginning, end, and chorus, and mayyybe breakdown. Changing their tuning to drop B for a couple of songs was cool though. This is a great listen, and shows great musicianship, but not so much memorability.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | randomguitarist | April 26th 09 | I like the review of the album but overall, i think this is a solid step for these guys. The production quality and overall musicianship has stepped up but I agree they haven't really thrown in anything new and refreshing. The songs are much more distinguishable and structured, but they need to lay off the cliche breakdowns.
