Looming over a vacant city are three giants who treat this location as their very effective playground. They want to keep all other groups of colossal beings away from the land, as they feel that the rest of the teams have gotten stale and stagnant. The trio's name? They are known by Ulcerate, hailing from New Zealand. I'm going to say without ambivalence that Everything Is Fire, which is the band's second full-length album, is one of the finest modern death metal records to have ever been conceived. Bleak, wild, and brimming with overall superhuman passion, it's a record that serves one of two major purposes and acts upon them effortlessly - the first of which is quite simple: Ulcerate's 2009 LP melts faces. Hard. Now here is another aspiration: they wanted to take tech death multiple steps further by implementing more authentic emotion whilst preserving the spirit of said subgenre. Considering the results to be a good payoff is a serious understatement, for Everything Is Fire must be heard in all of its glory in order for its quality to be believed. Topped with a keen production job alongside extremely potent compositions and stalwart musicianship (particularly from drummer Jamie Saint Merat), this is an undeniably awesome release.

Endlessly rewarding album that gets better with every listen. Everything about it is phenomenal, whether it be the production, lyrics, artwork, or the songwriting. One of the very few bands that renews my interest in death metal.

Everything is constantly changing and progressing, more so than chaos. It's not apocalyptic in any way; it's just a statement and an observation of how things are, or at least how they can be perceived. Everything is in a constant state of change. We cannot accept anything at face value. Question and rationalize everything, and always continue to. It's a commentary on human arrogance and how we perceive our place in our environments and deify objects and people out of pure tradition with very little rationalism.

Being not much of a metal fan, the genre of death metal isn't exactly my forte. I can accually only recall Cryptosy's None So Vile and In Morning's Shrouded Divine being death metal records that I have enjoyed and the latter isn't even very "death metal." But after all the critical acclaim Ulcerate's new release has gotten and with a name like Everything Is Fire I couldn't help but check it out. And I was extremely impressed. It is produced fanastically, created a dense and powerful atmoshere, acually I fell asleep listening through it for the first time, but it doesn't take away the fact that this face raps. The guitars are impressive, not just showing flare but depth, the bass is not only audible but exceptional, and the drumming is fucking mindblowing to say the least. Like the double kick is just, holy fuck fast. And not being a fan of the death metal vocals, enjoyed the way the vocals were mixed, being placed more "in the mix" rather than being placed in the forefront. Though, not exactly one of my favorite albums of the year it is definatly in my top 50, and is my undisputed death metal record of the year, maybe even my metal record of the year. And this coming from a known metal head.

drown within starts with that slow ambient riffage only a few bands do so well and misleads a proposition of a well intentioned atmospheric death metal album that actually deserves all the attention instead of shitty progtech, then their true intentions hit and they blur straight into the indistinguishable desert that is the techdeth empire. also way to pick the bottom of the barrel for your band name, o snap ulcers, so scary, next there'll be the bdm band gout and slam band ingrown toenail

Everything is fire? Well, this album certainly is! Ulcerate combine incredible atmosphere and rhythmical conplexity with crushing dissonant death metal riffage to create a psychologically crushing album.

Absolute hell on earth. I haven't been this excited by a modern dm band in a long time. This made
me go 'holy f*ck' so many times, particularity the second half of 3, as well as 4 and 6. 5 offers
somewhat of a break slowing things down, but 6 takes you right into it. 7 slows things down again
but is still insanely bleak, and the closer, while not the strongest track, has incredible
moments too. I'll have to give it another listen to confirm this isn't just an isolated perfect
listen, but holy dang this gets an instant 4.5 Edit: bump 4.6

This to me is like Dead Congregation/Incantation oppressive atmosphere with Immolation and Gorguts thrown in for good technical measure. Amazing album.
