3.5 great | Iai EMERITUS | April 27th 09 | There's been so much crap said about this already, and such a wide range of vastly different opinions, that I'd probably be excited to hear it even if I didn't already love this band. The original reports suggest that they've completely sold out and starting writing Christian camp songs to sing on your acoustic guitar by the fire? Awesome! The hardcore fans get all indignant and start throwing personal insults back? Even better!
I can sort of see where that first opinion comes from, in fairness - It's All Crazy! is a lot less self-obsessed and downbeat than anything they've done before, markedly so in contrast to a track like "Wolf Am I (And Shadow)". It's also more subdued and more content with itself, and many of the songs introduce orchestral instruments - the influence of psychedelia, particularly Sgt. Peppers, is all over this, especially in the last two tracks. Perhaps that's a little disappointing to hear for some, and it's hard to deny that this doesn't quite scale the heights of Brother, Sister, but people need to get over it. They're still a great band and this is still a great album.
Major props too, for being a band known for Christian imagery, and having the guts/intelligence/desire to write a joyous acoustic finale called "Allah! Allah! Allah!". Maybe if more of the religious people I knew were as spiritual as these guys can be I'd be a religious man myself. Something to consider.

4.5 superb | natey | April 20th 09 | Biblical references and a sing-a-long feel can give this album a falsely childish mask, but are you forgetting what band we're talking about? The lyrics are unsurprisingly passionate, potent and clever as ever; the instrumentation has continued to grow in diversity, but electric guitars and drum set have not exited the picture, nor has Weiss' voice lost all of its grit. Most importantly the songwriting is consistently ace, resulting in beautiful chord progressions and glorious melodies. I'm happy to say I've never heard a mewithoutYou song I didn't like.

4.5 superb | bobafe6604 | July 25th 09 | To be honest, I there are not many of the Christian roots left intact in my life which were grown at a young age - like most adolescents (or maybe 'some' is a better word), I rebelled against my parents' worldview at the ripe age of 14. Or so. Regardless, the things I still keep are the things that I think TRUE Christianity is about: helping others, being happy with yourself, loving others, loving yourself, God exists, God created, and of course "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" - among other things. Point is, regardless of MeWithoutYou's super-obvious religious view, there is not a preachy moment on this entire album, instead, the band focuses on what makes them happy and incidentally their worldview just flows out. What ensues is a beautiful album, full of rich textures, incredible flowing-dynamic lyrics, beautiful storytelling, and some really neat moments. I have been an on and off MWY fan, but after spinning this album umpteenth times, I am convinced they are one of the most solemn, complete, and important bands of our generation. Sing along!

4.5 superb | JokesorInsults | April 22nd 09 | In the first 3 listens here's what happened
First Listen : appalled at the new singsong style; wtf Weiss you took everything good about mewithoutYou and threw it away for your crazed sunday school singalongs
Second Listen: heard the lyrics again; Weiss, you sneaky trickster, you took all those lyrics you had for all those sad songs and put them to happy music! But, still, all these repetitive parts, and all these crazy pop structures? This just isn't you my man, I dunno if I can dig this.
Third Listen: HOLY SHIT WEISS, YOU TOOK EVERYTHING POIGNANT AND POWERFUL ABOUT MWY AND MADE IT HAPPY! THIS RECORD IS EVERYTHING YOU'VE EVER DONE, JUST WITHOUT BEING DEPRESSED!
In other words, it's really, really, really excellent.

I'm going to be generous, though, and pretend I've never heard mewithoutYou before; further more I'm going to pretend I give a flying crap about the genre (folk/biblecamp)...And even further I'm going to pretend I didn't hear the line "If you ever disobey your parents, we'll see".
Now, I'm ready to rate it.

4.5 superb | 3waycrash | September 15th 18 | It's All Crazy follows down a different path that the band had yet to full explore previously. It sounds lighter than their previous post-hardcore influenced sound with more of a focus on horns/strings/woodwinds, and less on heavier and fuzzy guitars. Lyrically, Aaron dives more into allegorical, campfire-like fables, and performance-wise he's a little more toned down. It makes for a different album in their discography, but it's uniquely enjoyable and a delightful listen.

4.0 excellent | VengeanceCactus | June 11th 15 | Every time I hear the "What a beautiful god" line in Timothy Hay, I can't help but crack a smile. These guys are a bunch of weirdos, no doubt, but they sure have a talent for writing great music. The complete sonic departure from their previous work is undoubtedly a little disconcerting, and deeper listening proves that the change is much more than just aesthetic. These songs are written in a completely different manner than anything the group has ever attempted before, and irrelevant to the quality of the record, I applaud them for trying to go in a new direction. However, despite some mixed results (see: Fig With A Bellyache) the majority of the record is fucking fantastic.

3.5 great | TRMshadow | June 21st 13 | Idk, I think I've really grown off this since I first listened to it. Something about the production is a little iffy? It sounds like the levels are slightly shifted when the vocalist comes in and then rebalances??? it might be just me. rAs for the music, more than a couple times it starts shifting into this praise and worship cadence and that is a huge turn off for me since I lost my faith.

2.0 poor | hesperus | January 2nd 11 | Any album, Christian or not, that gives me flashbacks of Catholic youth group is doing something wrong. I love mewithoutYou's other work because of its willingness to diverge from the norm in Christian music and make music that is a) emotionally engaging, and b) poetic. This album is neither, and it's heartbreakingly disappointing.

3.5 great | NeutralThunder12 | June 17th 10 | mewithoutYou are one of the most interesting and capable bands in modern indie, and this record proves that. It's beautifully orchestrated, catchy as hell, interesting and definitely a diverse and varied listen. While a great record, it is not without fault. It's a great sing-a-long, but sometimes the lyrical content, despite always rhyming perfectly, can get a little obnoxious. Some of the melodies can be a bit obnoxious too, in fact, this album just barely gets the 4, as it can become annoying at times. However, considering it's diversity and gorgeous arrangements, a 4 seems the perfect rating, but then again, it seems less serious and moving than their previous efforts, so, despite the structure, it gets a 3.5...

5.0 classic | Lions | March 24th 10 | Quite simply, this is probably my favorite record ever. It's impact on my life has been so gorgeously profound that I could never thank the band enough for what they have done (and I've tried!). 3.5 great | Jonnyborg | December 25th 09 | While an enjoyable listen, mwY’s latest simply does not have the musical, lyrical and emotional pull that their previous albums have had for me. 0.0 | OlDirtyPaule | May 22nd 09 | To put it into sentence, I'm disappointed. It's All Crazy! It's All False! It's All a Dream! It's Alright isn't the masterpiece I've expected after Brother, Sister. Actually, it is much less.
I don't care whether these guys play post-whatever-core, folk, indie rock or anything else, but many songs on IACIAFIAADIA just ain't as brilliant as their previous work. "Goodbye, I", "A stick, a carrot & string", "Timothy Hay", "The King Beetle on a Coconut Estate", and "Allah, Allah, Allah" are average indie folk/rock (nothing more, maybe less), "Fig with a Bellyache" consists of two of the most annoying song parts written in a long time and "Bullet to binary (Part Two)" as well as "Cattail down" also start uninspired.
Obviously, I'm not a native speaker, but I guess I quite well understood the lyrics and imho they really suck. I don't want to offend anybody, but this overly religious, one-dimensional repeated praises/sermons and bursts of bumptious fables and escapism - well, calling it "naive" would be euphemistic, I think.
At the end of my short review, I shortly want to mention what justifies quite solid 3.0 stars despite all the cons. Apart from the lyrics, the first three songs are brilliant: "Every thought a thought of you" is a nice sing-along, "The Fox, the Crow and the Cookie" is even better and can be compared to Neutral Milk Hotel's best moments and "The Angel of Death Came to David's room" has a killer refrain. Furthermore, as indicated above, "Bullet ..." and "Cattail down" at least show the bands high potential after the boring first parts.

4.5 superb | MelanieHouser | May 18th 09 | this album is everything wonderful. I do think that many if not MOST people need to realize the roots of their religiously inspired lyrics. Sorry to break it to you, but its NOT Christianity. Hard to believe because they talk of the Lord and God and use "bible" words, but it stems from Sufism which is an Islamic religion, and which is SO much more legit than any type of jesus-lover. This is what makes Mewithoutyou an utterly phenomenal band, unconventional in every way, purely fantastic. I love them!
