Ever since it was first released, many have hailed Tommy as a masterpiece, especially for its concept and originality; it became a pioneering record for what would become known as the rock opera. The tale of the deaf, dumb and blind boy still has many fans today, and is one that only could have been created in its era. For The Who, the album caused not only a massive surge in fame (which would eventually become too much for them to bear), but also an important development in their music, which moved towards a more album-oriented approach, strongly influencing their to-be classics Who's Next and Quadrophenia. The latter is in many ways its superior, better crafted, musically more diverse and engaging, but Tommy will remain legendary despite its flaws: it can be a bit bare and unexciting in places, yet it contains some of very strong Who tunes: Overture, Amazing Journey, The Acid Queen, I'm Free, and the ever-iconic Pinball Wizard. Considering they were the first to do this kind of thing, The Who actually did a pretty terrific job at it.

It's hard to describe the effect Tommy has on me. I had always thought that Quadrophenia was the definitive Who rock opera, boy how wrong I was. Tommy is a journey more than just a collection of songs. From the moment Overture starts to the reprise of Listening To You on We're Not Gonna Take It, Tommy takes you to a different place. As individual songs it would never work, but the whole is greater than it's seperate parts in this case. Pete Townshend created a complete masterpiece here and set the standard for which all other "rock operas" were to be measured.

Great album, there are many songs that people should know (more than "Pinball Wizard"). But, It's so hard to "understand" If you didn't see the movie before, You'll enjoy alot.

"Tommy" is the forerunner of the opera strand that Rock has barely explored until today. Being also considered a soundtrack, the album is only The Who showing they class and evidencing they musical gifts. I have never seen the movie but i have a lot of desire, and this is very due to the presence of these songs there. However, many tracks end up wishing on an album with four sides and a lot of unnecessary melody. Even so, it was a great bet in a decade of bands that risked little in the scene.

Honestly, this really doesn't do anything for me. It undoubtedly has had an effect on the industry as a whole and for thousands it truly hits them where it counts... but for me? Nothing. All I can say is that with this album there is just too much of a generation gap. 3.2/5

The sweetest fucking concept album/rock opera ever. The movie -- not so much, but can't win 'em all. The Who are the ultimate in successful artistic excess, 'Tommy' is the key argument that sometimes a little erratic indulgence is best.
