I feel like this grows as it goes, I actually like the non singles much better here. Hardline-Bloodshot I found less
interesting, i’d probably give them all 2.5-3. But everything from Ringside till the end rules. She’s evolving, but
doesn’t quite feel like final form yet. Good nonetheless. 3.7 imo

There are various levels of sadness (from sad to chronic depression) in the real world and with that, there is the various level of sadness in music (from sad-girl to score). Julien Baker has always had some of the most emotionally potent and explosive lyrical content that anyone has ever had. Sometimes her lyrics hit Chelsea Wolfe or even black metal types of obliterating and on her third new album Julien doesn?t hold anything back. She continues to question her religion and relationships with devastatingly powerful lyrics, almost problematic. However, the biggest jump on this album is the explosive indie rock nature this album takes with drums, electric guitar, and synths. Where her debut and sophomore records focused on acoustic guitar and piano, we get a whole band on this new album and damn does this fit so well with her lyrics. My only complaint is that the lyrics can be a bit dry after a while, but the album is short enough that it really isn?t an issue.

Right, look, so Julien has chops, can't take that away from her. I mean song-writing and lyrical chops, the vocal ones not so much, but that never mattered with her music. See, they way she writes her songs is a curious mix of gentle folk-isms but also wields a polish only likened to the most bombastic of pop stars. As always, I feel very torn on Julien's music. I like a lot of it, but it leaves a strange often unpleasant aftertaste.

Coming back with a full-band sound was the most intelligent thing Baker could have done: on top of broadening her palette, it also constitutes a stark enough departure from her past work. Musically, traces of post-rock, indie rock, shoegaze, and emo complement her indie folk'n'slowcore core sound, and that broadening of influences, as well as the addition of drums, give her meditations a more grounded nature; as she's slowly abandoning her religious roots, she seems to focus less on redemption, and more on the complexity of healing. She's still hurt, but this time she celebrates her endurance.
