They did an excellent job on this one. While Censored Colors felt like it would get stuck at moments, this album flows very well and manages to command your attention throughout. Workaholics they are, it still sounds like they're enjoying themselves and having fun. Going along with the silly sounding title, this may be their "funnest" album yet, all while sounding a lot more serious than they have in the past.
"Mornings" is gorgeous.

The album cover has a gross nipple on display. That's almost kind of like what Portugal. the Man have become: a dry withered teet that while gave life to a fledgling "progressive indie rock" genre years ago, is now all scabby and gross from all the suckling. It's nothing new.

Donuts and pixie dust are thrown into a large puddle, and there's no end to all this catapulting. The product we are left with is none other than The Satanic Satanist, the fourth studio offering courtesy of Alaskan psychedelic rock troupe Portugal. The Man. Some complacent songwriting and a redundant album title notwithstanding, this is a lush-sounding, pleasurable record containing a great amount of replay value. Frontman John Gourley's vocals are confident as well as soulful enough to mask whatever problems I have with the LP, and the same holds true for how much impact the instrumentation makes. The consistency is perhaps the most appealing aspect about The Satanic Satanist in one way or another.

This album started out as a 3 for me, but the more I listened to it the better it got. From the upbeat opener to the slow and somber closer, "The Satanic Satanist" brings 11 tracks filled with emotion. Not quite perfect, but definitely an excellent album that is well worth letting grow on you.

Yeah, the vocal melodies are pretty much consistently samey, and the lyrics aren't earth shattering. But what Portugal. The Man lack is overshadowed by their blissful and near-brilliant songwriting, with a colorful, sweet topping of soul on top.
