Coldplay has always seemed to want to be universal, but at this point, they've just crossed the line from universal to anonymous.
I mean, Mylo Xyloto had the same problem but shit at least that one had some good songs and some distinct Coldplay-isms to it. The music on this one is basically what people who hate pop music think all pop music sounds like. It's not pretty. Coloratura is too little too late.
And yeah, the lyrics flop hard too. Again, going for big, universal sentiments. But all I can really glean from it message-wise is "we're humans and we do stuff, by golly!" Like seriously, who is this for?

I'm so damn disappointed after having listened to this in full now. Coloratura was an incredibly promising song, respecially after the more experimental nature of the previous album. But it seems like Coldplay have regressed rinto boring musical mush once again. What a fucking waste

Coloratura was a really great track, and a welcome direction for the band. The rest is a compilation of the worst the band has to offer.

The writing disparity from the closer to the rest of the album is astonishing. I mean I can't say its truly terrible, as it is catchy at the very least but... jeez. Emojis as song titles, at times lifeless production (although it mostly sounds fine), and some of the lamest writing they've done yet. The closer, as many have already said, is by far the best track here.

I thought this was horrible throughout the entire record, until the closer Coloratura, which is in my opinion the greatest Coldplay song ever made.

"Spheres" has a couple of variation in pop styles, much like "Everyday Life". Of course its not on "Parachutes" level, but it isnt unlistenable like "HeadFull". It just falls in between, and gets an extra 0,5 star because of πΎπ€π‘π€π§ππ©πͺπ§π, a song that will be a seed for a progressive rock revival in a couple of years.
Just wait and see.

Coldplay has become a bland pop band that has drifted away from its original style and its early releases are now a bittersweet memory. In their quest to constantly evolve their style, Chris Martin & friends have transitioned into a generic band that produces outrageously commercial music for casual listeners. Musically, Music of The Spheres has an electro-pop character with some jolly synth tunes and some irrelevant and indifferent preludes/interludes. In various moments, Chris Martin sounds more Bono than Bono himself. "My Universe", "Higher Power" and "Humankind" were all written for radio airplay and are destined to be the latest arena crowd-pleasers. Recommendations: "People of the Pride".

Let me start by saying ?Coloratura?, the closing track on this album, might go down as one of their greatest songs ever written. The symphonic, progressive, and art-rock combination with space ambient creates a textural dream that only Sufjan Stevens has only ever done. But from there this album is a mixed bag of some decent tracks with some not-so-decent tracks. There are significantly more tracks that I warrant as better than worse, but man you nail the closing track, and that being your lead single really leads me on to them doing something truly explosive. But everything on that track is kind of played safe throughout the album. Plus, all the random interludes feel tacked on for no reason. So overall this is an above-average album with a truly amazing closing track.
