Tech Death Rap? Imagine taking a corroded
machete to the rapper Twista's throat and
that's what Oli Peters sounds like. It gets
old, fast, much like the music. Speaking of
the musical side of things, here are my
biggest qualms about it. The BPM's are pushed
to the max and never come down. Everything
sounds quantized to hell and back. This album
lacks so much melody and emotion, that I can't
distinguish one song from the other, which
leads to making other Tech Death bands sound
like Def Leppard by comparison. As a guitarist
for 20+ years, even I was having ear fatigue
by the third song. This was a disappointing
and almost unlistenable album for me.

Archspire play to their strengths, present very little in terms of innovation, but produce a crisper sound, even more cathartic riffs, and astounding atmosphere. I was pleasantly exhausted by the end.

i am speed. Crazy fast tech death with some br00tal parts as well as some neoclassical wankery solis, but da real MVP clearly is the vocalist delivery. His voice is typical brutal tech death growl, but he does not hesitate to regurgitate dem scifi lyrics in a super-short, super-fast manner matching the start-and-stop dynamics - that dude should try to rap, he fire tbh. Gotta say all these elements make the whole record kinda over-the-top, but the record is short enough.

The two singles are the two songs that are a direct rip from Relentless Mutation, which is funny when people are saying they liked them better than anything off of that album. It's what initially put me off being excited about it, because RM is still as awesome as it comes but I don't want a duplicate. Luckily the rest of the album is actually a decent step and variation from that approach. Score could increase an increment over time, we'll see.

Glad to see they're continuing the Mozart motifs. The Confutatis riff/solo on Remote Tumour
Seeker was a highlight of Relentless Mutation and the full-on Lacrimosa jam that is Reverie
on the Onyx is spectacular here. This album is nearly flawless, going to be spinning this
one on the reg til I die.
