As always, a community of music experts who have never written a song or are able to notate a C major scale inrtreble clef offer their insight about an album that went in one ear and out the other simply because it?s not musicrto play in the background while they get yelled at by mother for leaving their dirty dishes in the sink. This album isrsimply too difficult, too dense for the average Sputnikmusic Ebert slash Roeper to comprehend. If this wasrRadiohead, perhaps even Oasis, one could imagine the accolades it would accumulate. Unfortunately the lack ofrpower chords and high pitched, emotive vocals is enough to generate the expected apathy of an entire websiterof people that give high praise to the likes of Brand New and Charli XcX.

their formula is just getting tiresome. I wish they still knew how to write coherent songs instead
of coming up with a great idea and then totally squashing it under a heavy, soiled blanket of wank
and over the top drumming.

the middle section of Gestaltzerfall is a perfect example. smooth synths come in with some nice,
calming, well thought out ideas. first time the album has taken a real step back and let itself
breathe. a massive riff builds off this and chugs along with the synths filling out the section,
followed by a great, restrained solo. this would make for a perfect fade out piece...but nope!
let's rip this apart and throw in more stupid solo wanking and ridiculous drumming that has
nothing to do with that last minute and a half build up!

just annoying. they still have some great sections, but there isn't one song I can look at and say
I enjoyed it all the way through.

Can't see where AAL pushed boundaries. A very safe album here. And I get vibes of 'b-side' / this is their side project now.

4.0 excellentpeartnoy | March 26th 22

This is Animals as Leaders in the most technical and heavy side of their sound. Those who loved the more jazzy approach the last two albums took will probably be disappointed. There are no Brain Dances here.rBut holy sh*t personally I found this to be a lot of fun.

3.0 goodBlud Vidal | March 25th 22

The reactionary grown-up ex-Djentist in me wants to take a big giant crap all over this but it's actually..better than expected. The record does bog and the wank is obscene, but the tunes are nice and there's way more ear candy than on their last record. Plus, Red Miso is one of their best tracks in ages.

First impressions: lower on the headache scale than their previous record.

3.2 goodErwann S. STAFF | March 25th 22

Extremely mechanical, Parrhesia sees Animals as Leaders continue to shed the last remnants of their jazz fusion influences. Not that bright and colourful moments don't happen; they don't seem to constitute the band's focus anymore.

3.2 goodThompson D. Gerhart STAFF | March 25th 22

I'd love to see this band have fun again. Feels like another of their monochromatic installments. Not as much as Madness of Many, but it's missing the colorful spark from The Joy of Motion or the self titled.

2.5 averageScarlette Johansson is beautiful, Maya Hawk is beautiful, Margot Robbie is beautiful, women are beau | December 8th 23

Extremely mid album, which is a pain for me to say because some ideas on here are quite enjoyable. It's just that those positives are brought down by genuine black holes of creativity throughout the whole album.

4.5 superbtroyofyort | June 27th 23

Parrhesia finally sees the band wielding their mind bending complexities in a manner that makes for good songs, even when they forsake the beautiful lush clean harmonies that made TJOM and Self Titled masterpieces. Good to see shorter little pieces return to cut barrages from the longer tracks. Gestalzerfall, Micro-Aggressions, and Gordian Naught are the highlights.

3.5 greatBedex | April 10th 22

Here AAL sound like their best copycat - or in places, even like humans showing they can do AI generated djent better than an AI. They return to the electronic production of Joy of Motion, and largely return to the compositional style of their earliest albums. The acoustic contributions from MoM are completely gone, and the album just feels like an endless stream of riffz without much context. The softer interlude 5 is the first to truly go against this trend, and aside from 2 which has substantially more meat to it, the first half of the album feels a bit underwhelming. Their compositions are just as complex in terms of polyrhythmic shenanigans (as far as I can tell at least), but this prowess isn't showcased by much context - the songs are just about the well crafted chug. The second half does a fair bit better, especially 7 with its fun Woven Web-esque riffage, and 8 too to a lesser extent, but the riffy, conclusionless 9 really ends the album on a chuggy chug chug feel rather than the soulful music AAL has presented before. Not their best effort. 3.3

Tosin and his band continue to show why they are one of the best when it comes to instrumental noodly djent. Something about their soundstage and progressions is always top-notch and fits right in with a lot of what I always termed ?philosophical metal?. This very much is a thinking-mans album and a great thing to listen to while I am programming or writing. My favorite part of their albums is that the band never keeps you longer than 40-minutes. They know that sounds like these just don?t last long enough, so they always keep it nice and short. Sweet 33-minute album with some great guitar work, jazz infusions, and nifty electronic bits here and there.

This might actually be their best effort yet. It feels like they've trimmed out a lot of the fat from previous albums. It also feels like they leaned more into the metal side of things on this release which I appreciate.

AAL release the best possible djent album and hopefully shut up every other band for a
second so we can figure out wtf happened to Xasthur
