When I try to sum up my understanding and recognition of the Britpop movement and the "Cool Britannia" sentiment that dominated the 90s, this is the album that comes to mind as a condensed version of the movement. Not coming from Britain and being relatively young at the time of the Britpop era, I don't really have a first-hand recollection of anything other than "Wonderwall" being flaming huge. But Different Class seems to fill in the holes: the irreverence, the pride, the optimism, the drugs and sex. But perhaps most notably, it has the defining element of Britpop: anthems. "Mis-Shapes", "I Spy" and the anthem to end all anthems, "Common People". A great recapitulation of a generation.

79/100. Undeniably catchy and fun, Different Class is an absolute blast, tackling subjects of sexuality, social class, love, and lust with sharp wit and humor. The production is lush and clean, complementing Cocker's sultry vocals almost too perfectly. Just a great compilation of infectious, well-crafted pop songs.

Pop music with teeth, this album offers scathing social commentary with vivid portrayals of class differences and catchy choruses and beats. Emphasis on the sordid lives and relational quirks of upper and lower castes makes this a highly engaging portrait of 90s British culture. Perhaps the best of Britpop.

The best Britpop album I've heard so far! I could hear traces of David Bowie, Pink Floyd and The Kinks all in this album.

The first ten tracks on this album are almost perfect taking in some true classics along the way like 'Common People' and 'Disco 2000'. The lyrics are so good on this LP that they completely paper over a few of the occasional half-arsed compositions. Why not a higher rating? Well... The last two tracks ('monday Morning' & 'Bar Italia') are both fillers, and drag the whole record down a notch. End with a bang, not a whimper!

Different Class is one big working class anthem of an album. There isn't a single track on this album that comes even close to being misrepresentive, and there certainly ain't any bad songs here. Undeniably the natural highlight of Pulp's career, and undeniably one of the natural highlights in music history. This speaks for an entire generation, and probably quite a few latter generations as well. Different Class is nothing short of genius, and a vital album to the "Common People".

Ultimately, it's dominated by the singles. But what singles! Each and every one of the five tracks here that made it into the charts is an era-defining classic. Shame that the last four tracks let the side down in a very bad way. But at least the album tracks here are far better than those on some of the albums it contended with in the Britpop rat race (step forward Urban Hymns).
