Dare I say Immolation just made their best record of my lifetime (19 years)? Yes I do dare say. The band applies a metaphorically fresh coat of paint and assumes their spot back towards the top of the death metal food chain

When Immolation dropped Close to a World Below, it was a record 20 years ahead of its time. Now, that style of death metal is commonplace within the scene, and yet, Acts of God still makes it feel like Immolation are one step ahead the majority of their peers. It is the culmination of two decades worth of death metal superiority from a band who secured their identity early on and have spent the years since tinkering with it to perfection. Opening quasi-title track ?An Act of God?, hypnotizes with swells of discordant tumult, while ?Blooded? pays homage to the more visceral straight-for-the-jugular approach death metal cut its teeth on. This has been Immolation?s default sound for decades now, and to varying outcomes (see: Kingdom of Conspiracy), but the result feels elevated here; there is a delicacy to how they convey their brutality, with very deliberate, conscious choices made to ensure their material on Acts of God is of the highest caliber possible. Despite a few missteps throughout their career (again, see: Kingdom of Conspiracy), it?s this level of thoughtfulness that has kept them a death metal institution since the genre?s inception. Immolation has spent two decades at the top of their game, and here?s to hoping we get two decades more.

I put aside that the name Immolation is on this album, so it wouldn't inflate my rating. Having said that, this album is uninteresting. Everything feels like I've heard it a 1,000 times before. Sure the drumming is phenomenal, but in 2022 most extreme metal bands have this in spades. The riff work is uninspiring and the songwriting is lazy.

Peaks at the title track and sustains pretty well throughout but kind of feels a bit formulaic in the song structures and especially the guitar solos. True respect to Immolation for staying relevant and producing solid albums over the span of 35 years in this genre but it can be a challenge to tell one track from another on this album.

Graaaaaahhhh more religion but this is the first immolation I?ve heard, and probably the most fitting death metal vocals I?ve ever heard. Love that he goes like ?guh? after almost every verse it?s very atmospheric

When I listened to the top 100 albums of this website, Immolation's record was the only I truly disliked, and now I really want to revisit it because I loved this new record of theirs.

Consistent band is consistent. Ain't nothing that new but there are enough rhythmic changes and a nice alternance between slow and fast shit within each song for the album to be enjoyable.
