As infamous as drone seems, this record is extremely diverse for being "drone metal". All kinds of atmospheres, mostly suffocating :D

As my first step into the extreme drone metal genre I have to say I was thoroughly impressed. There were moments that had me literally paralyzed, being overwhelmed by the noises. Although I was not expecting it to happen with this group, that moment where music stops everything and drags you into it is rare, and Sunn O))) did the job well.

For the sake of variety, I definitely thought the album was above average and I enjoyed parts of it. I will say that Dark Ambient is not completely my type of music, but it still did incorporate a tiny bit of black metal sounding elements into the songs, mostly the guitar. I will also say that if you are into creepy sounding music that actually makes you feel fear, this album will probably be for you. Overall good album.

Ridiculously un-accessible, and stupidly long, but if you walk into this with an open mind and just let the dense wall of sound wash over you, you'll find that Black One is as gratifying as it is monotonous and lengthy.

Completely forgettable drone music that refuses to have any sort of emotional or aesthetic quality, let alone a decent attention-grabbing aspect.

I tried, my dudes. More dynamically interesting "drone" like Earth and Boris can be wonderfully hypnotic while still structurally interesting, composed music. This doesn't even feel composed at all; it feels like a couple guys improvising guitar drones over the course of an hour (and it quite well could be?) with little thought to how those long notes sound, where they go, or what general feeling or atmosphere they create. Which is none; there's no atmosphere and there's nothing to distinguish any long guitar note from any other long guitar note. It's basically Stars of the Lid with guitars, and none of the melody. There's no point to it, in my opinion. Drone metal, not good metal.

Black One is an interesting album in Sunn O)))'s discography, and it is so because it is, for all intents and purposes, the duo's tribute to icy, malevolent black metal. It's black metal by way of drone-doom, as evidenced by the appearances of two controversial-yet-successful USBM artists Malefic and Wrest, who man the one-man band's Xasthur and Leviathan respectively, the frigid and evil aesthetic, and of course the mention of one Elizabeth Bathory, because what influential black metal bands haven't spoken of The Blood Countess, right? The fact that the atmosphere here is so pungent and that there are actual well-written songs here put this record above just about everything they did before it, and really showed their musical maturation up until that point. The concept is executed very well, and one wouldn't be incorrect in saying that Black One was Sunn O)))'s first fully fleshed out and carefully carved record. Needless to say, it's some pretty enveloping stuff.

Train of Thought: "Sin Nanna", wow this is really nice. Moody as hell. "It Took the Night to Believe", also really good. Maybe a bit too long. "Rest of the Album" 10 minutes long!?!?! Who got the patience for this?!
