A horrible album. Disgusting sounds, awfull dischord that just goes on and on and on. Yet somehow brilliant. Perfectly sums up what the VU where about (at this point in time at least), from the pumping, pounding White Light/White Heat to the strangely facinating Sister Ray and by way of the totally surreal Lady Godiva's Operation the entire album is a joy. An awfull, dispicable joy.

Second best VU album, right after Velvet Underground And Nico. I think WL/WH holds together better as one whole, seems almost like a concept album. From the psychedelic feel of Lady Godiva's Operation to noisy mess of Here She Comes Now, this album is a loud and wild masterpiece that deserves recognition. It's classic.

Personally, this is my favorite album by the Velvet Underground. It takes the sound of "Heroin" and ?European Son" and pushes it to the limit seeing just how far they can take it. The title track is an amazing little ditty of sonic noise that John Lennon would have done heroin to for days on end. "The Gift" is an experiment with placing an amusing spoken-word short story over their noise-sound, and the effect is mesmerizing until "plop!" the song ends - Beautiful Reed-written lyrics spoken by Cale. The hypnosis carries into the next song though, "Lady Godiva's Operation", and the energy streamlines through soft interlude ("If She Ever Comes Now", a hint at the sound of the self-titled album that came next) into fucking heavy "I Heard Her Call My Name" - Between Tucker's pounding drums and Cale's raucous organs and electric instrumentation, you totally feel it when Reed yells, "and then my mind split open!" The album culminates in the epic "Sister Ray" a beautiful 17-minute arrangement of noise that many find it difficult to stomach at first - but do try - the synthesis of noise and pulsating beat is like the peak section of "Heroin" the whole way through - the song really is quite a feat, and it nearly broke the whole band up. At the very least, it's probably one of the reasons Reed's partner John Cale was fired (imagine John Lennon firing Paul McCartney!).

its like taking European son or Heroin, and making a whole album around it, its so good, and the song The Gift is so original i love it, and Sister Ray is just an amazing experience fr. Really great experimental stuff, but a bit too repetitive at some places 4,2/5

Entropic. "White Light/White Heat" is a fantastic album opener; intense. Great proto-punk. Fuzzy and loud. "The
Gift" is eerie at times, but the ending is too silly. Not a dud, though. "Lady Godiva's Operation" is one of the most
intense songs on the album; very eerie. I love it. "Here She Comes Now" never really comes up off the ground. "I
Heard Her Call My Name" is okay, but simply mediocre. Nonsensical lyrics. Perhaps that's where the enjoyment
factor comes in, but not for me, unfortunately. "Sister Ray" is entropy personified; I fucking love this track. Brutal
and sonically vicious. Perfect album ender and at polar opposite with the antecedent "Candy Says" on their self-
titled third album. B- Zach

Possibly the worst guitar solo EVER on "I Heard You Call My Name". While I do see recognize the historical importance of the
Velvet's contributions to what we call Alternative or Indie Rock today, this is NOT easy to get through. The title track is a
notable highlight and was later covered by David Bowie. However, things get much stranger as the album progresses. For example,
check out the lyrics to "Lady Godiva's Operation". This falls somewhere between interesting and masochistic for me.
Highlights: "White Light / White Heat" & "Lady Godiva's Operation".

Another great Velvet album. I absolutely love the sound of it and it has a few classics on it. I think Sister Ray runs on a little too long, but other than that, the album is great.

White Heat/White Light is an album I've planned to listen to for ages. After listening to all other acclaimed Lou Reed releases and liking (or even loving) them, I couldn't wait to experience this, especially since it was tagged as Experimental Rock. So I expected mostly songs like "The Murder Mystery" from the self-titled that was released a year later. And I was quite right; most of the songs were based on the same sort of songwriting. But unfortunately, I didn't enjoy them as much. That said, this album was a disappointment after the first listen. Yes, there definitely were some "really cool" sounds here and there, especially on the album closer "Sister Ray". Bare in mind I've written this after listening to the songs just once. Therefore I won't even rate this album yet, since I'm afraid that I didn't understand its "greatness" yet, which may require several listens. However, I'm also afraid that I won't achieve it anyway and that my opinion will remain the same:
It's fun at a certain mood, it's interesting, it's certainly alright, but I also have to use the overused word "overrated".
