early listens give me mixed feelings. adore the mixing/production, they sound huge and cavernous here. some truly stunning moments. bogged down by the fact most of the songs have the same quiet/loud/quiet/loud structure that they've already done to death. previous ahab albums become more rewarding over time and i'm sure this is no different. gonna spend more time with it.
edit: okay, yep, this album is wonderful. it feels like the true follow up stylistically to the first two records with little flourishes of new things and all of it works. the samey structures don't bother me now i'm deeper into the intricacies of the record. 2023 is off to an amazing start.

Long and gigantic songs and... a super cool-looking cover. More seriously, The Coral Tombs is built from a quite a mixed bag of influences, varying and blending doom, sludge and post-metal. My biggest issue with it is the way too high ratio of cleaner/quieter sections, which makes it a bit hollow. Not bad, but I think they could have offered a bit more.

Really solid, but it isn't sticking with me as much as Boats of Glen Carrig did. It's weirdly quiet overall too.

Those first few songs are really intoxicating in their atmosphere, but I feel like the album could stop there and be a brilliant EP rather than an album 20 minutes longer than it should be. Epic for sure but some sections in the second half of the album fail to carry the initial momentum of "Prof. Arronax Descent into the vast Oceans" through to the title track.

I was never a big fan of Ahab's previous releases. They've always been too lethargic and homogeneous for me. This one, though, has some decent clean singing and melodies, as well as crushing doom riffs, death growls, and dynamics. Also, each song has enough of its own identity that the album doesn't just slowly blend together.
