Muddy mixing feels intentional 4 vibes but i feel like mister brown gets shafted more by it which is a shame bc the reason i was so hype for this was to hear Danny (enjoyable rapper) over Jpeg beats (very fun and creative) but i'm tired of hearing bars from someone who calls a mixtape over a decade into his career scaring the hoes. they're both funny sometimes though. listen to it its good

This feels like the first time you played GTAV in 2013: you are overstimulated, driving unsafe at any speed, cops are trying to extrajudicially repossess your body, Danny Brown is dropping bars as you smash through traffic, pedestrians, picket fences, sirens blaring, NPCs staring in disbelief, the world is a blur on your high definition TV, your speakers aren't loud enough, you hit the wrong button and Franklin is exiting the car while going 130mph on the wrong side of the road. You reload and do it again. rGoing to be processing this for awhile, the samples are dense, bars are wild, production is out of the park. The vibes are incredible.

Crazy beats (that was to be expected) with occasional disso-saxo shenanigans and dem dual chipmunk-soul/slowed-vapor snippets support those always-on-the-edge DBrown raps. Intense and challenging to digest at first, but real cool as expected from these two mfs, even though DBrown's impact weakens after like two verses of his. Just gimme a JPEG x Zel tape.

Really wanted to like this more but the gratingly loud instrumentals constantly drowning out Danny rhonestly just got annoying af.rEDIT: Seems like they fixed the mix on DSPs but the problems I had on first listen aren't as rglaring now. This album is definitely bonkers (mostly in a good way) and it's growing on me more rand more as it continues to digest.

The first five or so listens were not the most comfortable but after some time this album really grows and settled in. Maybe I was a bit scared too. After adjusting to the chaotic and abrasive soundscape this record really shines. jpegmafia brings great energy and intensity on his rhymes and Danny Brown brings his signature personality and transparency to the table. Somehow the Street Fighter backdrop they had at the live set made me appreciate the album a bit more, to me Fentanyl Tester feels like a Street Fighter set between the two rappers the way it ebbs and flows with the up tempo beat and switch offs between the rappers. Really not even close to something I want to listen to everyday but there is a lot of great stuff to unpack here.

I?m always pessimistic when it comes to full-length collaborative records because it seems more times than not that the things that make the individual artists great can really get lost when they try to work together. However, I am extremely surprised at how seamless the combo of JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown is. The number of ideas that come together on this new record really shows off both the eclectic rapping style of Danny Brown and the bombastic sound design of JPEGMAFIA. Every track has a slew of those abstract samples from JPEGMAFIA and the witty one-lines from Danny, it?s hard not to find this an extremely enjoyable record.
