All 12 Gauge really is, is an irkingly standard melodeath record, albeit executed very profoundly. The riffs are good n' catchy and the songs are just the right length, but an overall feel of repetitiveness brings the record down. Most songs melt together a bit too much, so after listening to the record, it's very hard to actually remeber a certain individual song. In the end, 12 Gauge is a good melodeath record but it's also unmemorable and repetitive. Only recommended for enthusiasts of the genre.

First impressions: Way better than For the Revolution. It's most similar in sound to The Black Waltz but thrashes harder while retaining the high energy of an album like They Will Return. No throwaway tracks either, each track is as good as the last. Expect me to review this within the next few weeks, but it's definitely an excellent return to form for Kalmah.
Final Verdict: Best Kalmah album since They Will Return.

Better than the two previous albums, but still not as good as the first three albums. I won't find myself listening to this when I can listen to "They Will Return" instead. I can listen to that all day long.

Kalmah's 12 Gauge has moments of absolute brilliance, but is sometimes hampered by generic and boring riffs. Luckily, we are treated to some of the catchiest riffs in quite some time (opening of One of Fail,) and the solos are all ace, especially Godeye. The album ends on a slow and haunting note in Sacramentum and it proves to be the most solid track on the entire album. For the Revolution was a good album with some great tracks, but 12 Gauge surpasses it in every possible way.

Perhaps it's my growing tastes within the genre, but I've found Kalmah getting into an increasingly uncomfortable niche with their last three albums or so. Whereas I felt For the Revolution was a bit of a return to form of the band's early days, this latest offering feels redudant. That isn't to say there really is anything wrong with this disc, or that it really sounds all that different from For the Revolution or The Black Waltz. The problem seems to be that Kalmah have found a formula they feel comfortable repeating continuously, and it feels like it's taken them as far as they can go with it.
