4.5 superb | Knott- EMERITUS | February 18th 10 | More open, more conventional and certainly less suffocated, The Winter Of Mixed Drinks sees Frightened Rabbit take on directions many thought would ruin them, but who knew they would do happy so damn well too? Hutchison is no longer the bitter boy he was on The Midnight Organ Fight, so The Loneliness And The Scream's wordless chorus is euphoric without a hint of regret or sadness; all over are his assertions that the past is the past and this is a new honesty. The lyricism's still poignant, moving to the point of tears, just not for the same reasons as it used to be. The production values are slightly bumped, but the band still sound like they're playing in your front room, those folk-pop guitars and organic rhythms intertwining into strands that make up what is already one of the year's best records so far; if it grows as did TMOF, we might have a close call on our hands.

This year's account is still vintage Frightened Rabbit; having the ability to be both heartwarming and uplifting, just like its predecessor. "The Winter of Mixed Drinks" is a collection of songs that is tremendous enough to stand out as a separate commodity, even if it is in no way, shape or form as good as the 2008 release.

2008. No matter what the result, it was sure to be held up to the highest of standards. Nevertheless, The Winter of
Mixed Drinks walks a thin line, but comes out as a success in my eyes. Despite some fervor among diehard Midnight
Organ Fight Fans, The Winter of Mixed Drinks doesn't represent an entirely marked change in direction from the
Scottish boys. Rather, the larger, more resounding sound on the 2010 release results in a more accessible and
almost grandiose territory. Don't fret, the beautiful imagery and songwriting is still present, which is what makes The
Winter of Mixed Drinks such a solid release in the end. "Swim Until You Can't See Land," "Things," and "Skip the
Youth" can easily hold their own as single songs among Frightened Rabbit?s, albeit short, discography. The Midnight
Organ Fight seemed to touch listeners in their hearts. The Winter of Mixed Drinks is just as poignant but aims for the
ears, instead.

4.0 excellent | NeutralThunder12 | February 19th 10 | Clearly, one of the best of the year so far, even though this was not as fantastic as their previous release. Though it
had some problems with structure and superfluous dragging in spots, the arrangements and use of horns/other
instruments were used in a sophisticated and flawless manner, making each song interesting. In a way, this reminded
me of the way Sigur Ros songs sort of flow, with buildups that just coast and tickle your ears. Some people will like
Rabbit's transformation, some will prefer the old style. Whatever the case may be, though Frightened Rabbit still has
to work some small kinks out, it is clear from this release that they are not far from a classic, which they released in
2008. Will they ever top it? Probably not.The main problem is, and the reason that Midnight Organ Flight is superior,
is because about half of the songs on the album, though they arrangements are still excellent, never quite go
anywhere. Some songs start and finish without a true middle. Even so, the tracks that are without this blemish are
fantastic, and enough to distract from the slight inconsistency in song structure and bring this from a really high 3.5
to a solid 4. Tied with Immolation for best of the year so far.
