The thing about Joanna Newsom is that she has a voice you could listen to for hours, without any instrumentation, and you'd just fall in love with it over and over again. The thing about Have One On Me is that it is so much more than that. Gorgeously sparse, beautifully composed, intelligent songwriting kept up for over two hours. A ridiculous amount of depth contained, this is a record that will surely continue to give and give and give till the years end, and then some.

Haha I feel like this is one of the most ridiculous, stupid albums I've ever heard. I was a casual fan of Ys, not getting the hype and totally understanding why people hated it but still enjoying it all the same. This however, is so much easier to listen to even though its over two hours long. Fuck me man, fuck meeee

maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but I can't see how this is any less than a classic.
every song is unique and stands as a fabulous song alone, and still serves the album as a
whole. her progression is absolutely a treat to watch as she takes on her most ambitious
move yet with ease and grace. it looks like this generation has found it's Joni Mitchell.

4th January, 2022: Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me (progressive/chamber folk, 2010)
This is one of those albums in which my view on it is severely swayed by whether I’m in the
mood for it. There are days in which the meandering and illogical song structures annoy me
and Joanna’s aversion to traditional hooks means they go by without any engagement, but
there are others where it builds a trance-like atmosphere and every dink or plink of piano
or harp adds to the surrealist vibe. There are hooks to be found here, if you dig deep
enough, but Joanna is certainly more interested in her songs telling a story than them being
memorable, and I think that there is where we divide - as someone who doesn’t really listen
to music for lyrics, there’s only so far that 10 minute harp wanderings can take me.
But still, the atmosphere is spellbinding, and Joanna is a star both with her bizarro vocal
inflections and her more traditional piano and harp playing. There may exist a timeline
somewhere in which she releases a piece of concise songwriting that fully appeals to me, but
I don’t think she has much interest in doing that. And that’s okay.
