3.5 great | Resident Metalhead Piranha | March 27th 17 | "Fading Lights" closes the curtain in appropriate fashion for the Collins-era Genesis and what I believe is a solid effort in their catalog. Surely, they've moved very far from their prog roots even before this point, but this album shows their edge for pop-flared rock tunes such as "No Son of Mine" and "Driving The Last Spike," and tunes like "Dreaming While You Sleep" and "Fading Lights" show us how their talent for crafting long songs never went away. Phil's vocals were also spot-on for the time, perhaps some of his best throughout his lengthy career, and the production values have aged well, carrying off a fairly vibrant sound with nice textures to the unique drum sound and keyboard work. Sure, several of these tunes don't work well ("Since I Lost You," "Tell Me Why," and "Never a Time" in particular), but it still makes for a good swansong to 'Genesis.'

3.5 great | mandan | April 24th 13 | Even if the album has interesting moments, it lacks some of the punch that made earlier Collins-Era works worthwhile. Had this album had fewer balladry and more attitude, it could've been better. Collins did well in leaving the band after this.

2.0 poor | Gerkuman | December 18th 12 | There are the makings of a good EP in this Album. A very good EP in fact. The first four tracks work well, though most of them don't sound like the Genesis of Abacab, let alone the Genesis of old. Even so, they do their job well and three of them made good singles. But the rest of the album is a boring slush; either toothless ballads or pale imitations of their 80's experimental pop. It might be sensible to boot up iTunes, download the first couple of tracks (and possibly the final track Fading Lights) and pretend that it was released that way.

2.5 average | AvantSeventier | January 2nd 12 | I don't think that even Genesis' die hard fans like so much this album, I'm SO open-mind when a band have changes in his career (members, sound, lyrics etc.) I don't matter so much if They sound Pop or Progressive, but, definitely "We Can't Dance" is (in my opinion) the worst album in Phil Collins-Genesis' career (If You got the idea). Ballads might catch You and Poppy songs that don't have many sense too. But the rest of album has a 'strange mix up' between "Pop and Progressive" sound. I'm still prefering 80's albums ("Abacab" and "Invisible Touch"). songs as JHKM and NSOM might 'fool' Amateur listeners that think this album would be great.

1.5 very poor | clairvoyant | March 16th 07 | Nothing but pop boredom on this one. While the 80s output of Genesis was strung with uninspired prog songs and classic pop songs, this whole album in general is a complete reversal of what saw on such albums like Invisible Touch and Abacab. The pop songs here are extremely boring, whereas the very few prog tracks are of a very high quality. We Can't Dance, Hold On My Heart, and Never A Time are all sleepers that couldn't find a catchy hook to save their lives. No Son Of Mine seems like it could improve, but once again falters. Although Jesus He Knows Me is a fun track that is definitely one of the best of the album, it is still no Land Of Confusion or That's All. The shining star here though, is Fading Lights, the best progressive track released by Genesis since 1980's Duke's Travels/Duke's End. I advise staying away from this album, unless you are dying to hear Fading Lights and can't find the song anywhere.
