The first half of Chamberlain Waits is what many of us probably wanted the last The Gaslight Anthem album to sound like: catchy, strong but guiltless punk with a strong inclination to level with us, beer and women. The prior album coming out in the same year was just a stroke of luck, actually, given American Slang's, uh, difference in its expected sound. The second half of Chamberlain Waits, though - that's something that took me a little more time to fully appreciate. It's here that The Menzingers weren't as immediate as the first half of golden tunes, but in hindsight, however, the ending tracks turned out to be quite resilient and purposeful, easily on par with the first six or so songs. I won't pretend this band is anything other than a 2006-2008-era The Gaslight Anthem at this point, because that's just what they are. But The Menzingers do make music that lasts, immediate and grow-able, and right about now they are probably doing it better than most of the bands in their scene. 'True' pop-punk, without the blinding sun - it's nice to not be forced to have to rush in quickly and restlessly get to know you. We can take our time with this band, and they'll reward us handsomely for doing so.

Their second best after OtIP. Even though I didn't listen to this one for at least 4-5 years, it's still ingrained in my head. The first 5 songs are especially godly, and while the rest is kewl, it does not attain such pop punk greatness.

Few times in the past have I come across a record that captures the melodic punk sound as well as Chamberlain Waits. As infectious as it is raw, The Menzingers' sophomore release exhibits the rare combination of accessibility and growing potential for continued listens. To complement the record's infectious qualities, Chamberlain Waits is heightened by vivid and honest lyricism, not unlike 2008's The '59 Sound. With all this said, it isn't far-fetched to say that Chamberlain Waits is one of the greatest punk albums in recent memory, and certainly one of the more prevalent releases of 2010.

More than talented, more than adroit, more than unique or outstanding, The Menzinger’s Chamberlain Waits is one, simple, thing- playable. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been helplessly unable to skip past the romping fun of “I Was Born” or “Time Tables” while behind the wheel. Not so much sonically, but purposefully, Chamberlain Waits is 2010’s answer to Japandroids. Easy listening for the excited. Pop-punk or not, the rough drawl of the vocals matched with the most apt melodies the band could muster make Chamberlain Waits so much more than just another Gaslight Anthem look-alike. It’s tough to call The Menzingers’ breakout LP an inherently deep piece of music, but at this point, I really don’t give a fuck. It’s fun as hell, and somehow managed to outplay just about every other new record of mine in 2010. If that doesn’t count for something special, then I don’t know what does.r
