Perhaps the greatest studio album ever recorded, in many ways transcending what 'jazz' otherwise means while in other ways remaining totally comfortable and familiar.

Charles Mingus' The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is the perfect collision of jazz and composition; a single piece with the free spirit of its time and genre but made from the mind as much as the heart. Black Saint is certainly a planned and organised epic, but beyond that, it is a jazz piece: with the very same jazz that improvisers of bebop mustered notes from thin air into brilliant songs, Mingus forms a single, overwhelmingly expressive large-scale work with the cohesive, thought-out approach of the Stravinskys and Schoenbergs that he studied in his youth. Tying the two diverging styles together is the cumulative climaxing of Mingus' career--his compositional peak, his gypsy aesthetic, his massive band of virtuosos, and every hallmark of the unique musical soul that was Mingus himself--mixing, bursting, and booming into what is potentially the greatest jazz record of all time.

The first drum roll hits, and everything's fine, It is impossible for me to write anything but an emotional review of this. The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is free, or appears to be at first blush, and to be honest with you, I didn't get it at first, But it;s all a matter of hearing it at the right time and place, turning your brain off, and letting it hit you. There is no record in the world that sums up the pain of unrequited love better. I tend to think of the instruments as characters, The tuba is the primal urge, the trumpet (whatever it is) is the worrying nagging obsession. The drums are cool, perfect, throwing everything else into emotional contrast. The saxophones are wistfulness, and lust. The piano is the world weary cynic. And then there is the lady.

The Black Saint... offers so much for the lover of jazz, from mind bending melodic section to the epic time changes and syncapations. One must be ready to expect everything and anything from this record.

On my first listen, I had many "wow" moments, but my most basic summary statement: "I'm going to have to listen to this at least 50 more times." There is a change in the air every time I put this on where the inevitable desire of the human soul takes mainstage and never leaves as it settles into the heart and mind. One of the most soulful albums I've ever heard, with equal compositional and technical finesse that can give anyone a run for their money today. And this was over 50 years ago. If this came out today, it would still be heralded as a major accomplishment.

The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady is such an amazing album. You feel the emotion behind each song and the sound that the instruments make are just insane, its just sexy. Each songs are almost fucking good. Almost perfect album, i understand why its the most high noted Jazz album of Sputnik and because its mine too., but the track got kindda old fast, so it loose some point afterwards.

Please don't hate me for this. I've tried so much to give this, much like any other jazz album a chance - but in the end, jazz is just simply not for me. I can respect it because of how influential it was and how many other artists wouldn't exist because of it, but as for me, I just can't get into it no matter how much I've tried. Sorry.

Sensual jazz. As experimental and improvisational as a big band could get, as sexy as a flamenco guitar can play, and as much emotion as a jazzy ballet can provide. A passionate piece of art, technical and yet romantic at its core. That fucking motive first played during "Group Dancers" and repeated during "Trio Group Dancers"; this is the kind of motive you only have to listen to once. Even if 5 years go by without listening to it, it becomes apparent as soon as it appears: it has never left your head.

Who knew jazz would be good? Along with his extended compositional career, Mingus has delivered a long term relationship with his audience, not just on his incredible live endeavors, but also on his in-studio work that remains until today, some of the best jazz material ever. His ever-labored efforts and commitment to composing were a trademark of his artistic individuality and often resulted in brilliant outputs. His methodical and painstaking process peaked with The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, a feat of its own. In this record, the bassist extraordinaire and composer reached his artistic zenith with three songs and three modes, composed for a big band, in which few jazz stars could be found, but the final results from the assembly as a whole could match those of a genius soloist and even surpass it, almost reaching a classical composer level. Solo Dancer is a smoother, subtle opening for a rather turbulent and emotive narrative-piece, reaching its peak of intensity on the Group Dance of the album's last Mode. Sorrowful human voices are expertly simulated in the fantastic Duet Solo Dancers, paying tribute to the ancient times of slavery of black people in contrast with the modern city insanity. Never has popular music reached such levels of emotion and elegance at the same time. Mingus has made himself a path to eternity with his career, but it was by this collection of works that his music was deeply scarred into History's galleries.

To some it may come off as a bit chaotic or lengthy... but to me it's just brilliant. Quite a bit shorter than "Mingus Ah Um", thereby making it a bit more digestible, but the aforementioned sits just a hair above this when it comes down to overall enjoyment. 4.4/5

This has to be in my top 5 albums I've ever listened to. The range of moods and thrills this record makes ryou go through is absolutely astounding. I don't think there's enough words to describe it. It is a landmark in the rfield of music.

Though I listen to a lot of jazz, I don't know a lot about it. I'm familiar with the bigger artists and I know some smaller ones, but overall I must say I'm still a beginner in jazz. That being said, I know my classics, and this is without a doubt one of them. A lot of early jazz albums tend to be rather incohesive sounding, but this one isn't. At all. The album races through various themes that all have something in common with each other (a lot of the themes return in different tracks in different forms as well, delivering a sense of continuity) while never running out of ideas or just simply recycling. Pair this with nothing short of impressive musicianship and great composiotion and you have one of the greatest albums of all time.
