2.5 average | Iai EMERITUS | January 18th 07 | You'd never have guessed that Lostprophets would go on from here to become one of Britain's biggest rock bands. The Fake Sound Of Progress mostly sounds like the work of any number of hard rock bands that appear and disappear two weeks later after 1 or 2 hits. Had Start Something not been as impressive as it was, these guys would have gone the same way as My Vitriol, Engerica, and InMe. Still, even if it's nothing special, and you could probably find a dozen records as good in the hard rock section of any second-hand record shop, that's not to say it's bad. "Shinobi vs. Dragon Ninja" packs a punch they'd never quite recapture. "The Fake Sound Of Progress" was decent, too. The rest is adequate, but easily forgotten. LostProphets fans love it, of course. I find it to be a basically good, unremarkable album.

1.5 very poor | Progamuffin | August 24th 17 | A few good ideas (few jazz licks, Mike's stellar drumming, good production) makes this nu metal album better compared to other nu metal albums.rBut like any other nu metal album with good musicians and interesting ideas it's like eating an Sbarro cheese pizza with parmesan, it only makes it tolerable.

3.5 great | MaggieG | September 7th 14 | It's very hard to talk about Lostprophets now without mentioning the unfortunate and depressing
circumstances that brought about their break up last year. Whilst Ian Watkins is a disgraceful
sick person, I don't think it should really detract from discussing Lostprophets in terms of their
music because in their heyday, they were a very solid band and were one of my favourites in my
teens. Thefakesoundofprogress, the group's independently produced debut, is a far cry from their
later emo-imbued stadium rock with more of a nu metal sound in the same vein as Incubus and early
Deftones. Don't let that genre-label put you off however as this is a very enjoyable album. The
songs have a very cool raw energy to them and don't lose their replay factor. 'Shinobi vs Dragon
Ninja' and the title track are hard hitting nu metal anthems (the latter especially) but tracks
like 'Five is a Four Letter Word', 'Kobrakai' and 'The Handsome Life of Swing' also carry great
punches. 'A Thousand Apologies' and 'Awkward' are the weaker tracks on the album as they lack some
of the impact factor that the other tracks have which does keep this album from being greater than
it is. However, this is still an awesome album.

4.5 superb | numarion | January 31st 13 | Who would have thought these guys from Wales would be going into so much stardom from this album? It's a classic album of the 2000's that can never be emulated, maybe it was a fluke. Amazing and multi-layered album.

4.0 excellent | Nytro | November 19th 12 | This album encompassed my childhood like the typical "Hybrid Theory" or "Iowa", but this album held something different. Lostprophets were not just more proficient at their instruments, (no seriously, Lee Gaze can play), but they felt much more sincere than the average "nu metal" band. Lee Gaze is impressive on this album, especially in the chorus of "...And She Told Me to Leave", "Kobrakai", and the ever metal "Handsome Life of Swing." Where this album fails to be a classic is the fact it holds some very forgettable songs. "Awkward" is just filler, "Still Laughing" takes too long to come to a dramatic conclusion, and "A Thousand Apologies" has too much dj scratching for my liking. But the first 6 tracks plus "For Sure" and "Ode to Summer" rule. The interludes are also entertaining. All in all, very good debut that the band followed with another very competent album.

0.0 | Julianna Reed EMERITUS | March 12th 12 | Lostprophets utterly struck it out of the park with this one. The group tends to doubt its effectiveness because, you know, "it was recorded in three weeks so lol it can't be good" but don't listen to Ian. This is them at the brink of their career, making music that actually stood out from the crowd. Sigh.... How I miss those days.

5.0 classic | thecwo | May 2nd 11 | this album is the album that opened me up to real music. i guess one day my brother had had enough of me listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd and the same thing my parents listened to, so he slapped this in my CD played and made me listen to it. that changed my life forever. without this album i may still be listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd and Hank Williams Jr... thank god i'm not.

3.5 great | Masochist | September 4th 08 | This is Lostprophets first album, the heavier, nu-metal-y one. I first heard it when my roommate played it in our room, and I was surprised to hear that it was those same guys that sang "Last Train Home." So I checked out the entire album, and I liked what I heard. Lot of raw stuff here...and lots of emotion. "Shinobi vs. Dragon Ninja" is a great song, as is "Kobrakai." Critics, of course, called this album "unoriginal;" I really like this album, though, so I think I'll keep my fake sounds, thank you very much.

3.5 great | bobafe6604 | May 5th 08 | A treat of an album. Contains such classics as "Shinobi vs. Dragon Ninja" and "Kobrakai". British Hip-Hop-tinged nu-metal with a nice 90's sheen- this was just cotton candy to my ears. These days, the overall flaws are obvious: copy-cat riffs, sub-par vocals and lyrics- Lostprophets were fueled on sheer will and determination, their live shows raw and energetic. What the band lacked in true songwriting ability they made up in being badass and not giving a damn what anyone else thought. A good listen- check it out.
