Out of the numerous albums that I have
listened to, analyzed, disected, and engrossed
myself in, this is hands down my third
favorite. Or maybe fourth.

This album was lent to me one weekend by a good friend of mine whose musical reputation I admired. I listened to the album once from beginning to end and that was that. I thought it was good; some songs are catchy, some seemed far out, and the rest just took me along but were not compelling. I decided to listen to the album again before returning it to my friend and to this day I am glad I made that decision. Every diminutive detail that I had missed during my first listen stood out to me like nothing I had ever heard before. The music was incredible because it was so surreal. I felt disconnected entirely from reality. I was convinced that The Flaming Lips wanted me to feel like I was on drugs. I listened to the album again and again. From a listener’s perspective, I loved the album because of Wayne’s scratchy, high-pitched vocals that are analogous to the cries of a child. I was completely satisfied with this album from a scientist’s perspective because it was a musical experiment. This album is complete. It allows me to think while I listen to the music, but at the same time demands my attention to its intricate beauties. It does not resonate well with some individuals because of their musical preference, which is completely understandable. Some individuals think The Flaming Lips sound terrible, but cannot attack their originality. Their music delivers an undeniable magnificence that can rarely be appreciated in any genre. I recommend this album because it goes beyond what I expected musically and unravels my mind during every listen. Even if it takes more than a single listen I bet it will do the same for you.

The Soft Bulletin is really a strange album for me to contemplate, let alone rate. While I'm listening to the album, I'm not so sure what's so great about it. As soon as it's over, though, I really want to start it over again immediately, and when I leave it alone for a while, I yearn for it. There's just something about The Soft Bulletin that is indescribably endearing in all of its elegant weirdness. As much as every fiber of me wants to hate "A Spoonful Weighs a Ton" and "The Spiderbite Song" - quantifiably, I should hate them endlessly - I can't help but love listening to these songs.
Oh, and I will most certainly give the band credit for knowing how to let loose a bit and kick butt... I'm looking at you, "Race for the Prize".

Such an excellent album! Man, there are so many great things to say about this record. It's kind of sounding raw but also pure at the same time, I really can't explain it. The instrumentation is incredible, also great drum playing. Also fantastic lyrics, especially I like them on the Spiderbite Song, that's when they are really funny but also deliver a great message. One of my favourite moments of the album is probably that one part in The Spark That Bled after Wayne sings "caused a chain reaction", such an awesome instrumental and vocal combination. I must say that I enjoy the first half of the album a little more than the second; in the end I would give them a 10 and an 8 that average to 9.

Some of the most beautiful instrumentation I've heard - in fact I'll say it's the pinnacle of indie rock in this regard. However, Coyne's lyrics are very polarizing often utilizing cringey Tumblr-core philosophy.

Gorgeous music. Lots of progression, the songs never stay in one place too long. Awesome sounds, lots of details and layers. One of the most genuine and open albums I've ever heard, with lyrics that are almost uncomfortably honest (WHEN YOU GOT THAT SPIDER-BITE ON YOUR HAND!!!!!). One of the best albums of the 90's, maybe of all time.

'The Soft Bulletin' recovers from a very poor start to be a just-ok album. The first five or six songs are lyrically weak and very poorly produced; whinging keyboards and clumsily loud drums with jarringly mixed vocals abound.

Wayne Coyne working more of is beautiful magic. This still sits just a bit lower than Yoshimi, but it's still a fantastic album. For all you out there not listening to The Flaming Lips; Stop, just Stop.... I'm serious, Stop.

I really wanted to like this album. There are some fascinating ideas throughout, and most of the members seem to be adept at what they do. There is, however, one exception: Wayne Coyne's vocals. Coyne tries far too hard and strains his voice to hit notes that come out off-key anyway. His voice becomes more cringe-inducing with each new track, and nearly ruins what is otherwise a very solid album.

This album took a while to grow on me. The singing anoyed me for some time and the sounds of the instruments did not quite click with me but than one night as I lay listening to it on the headphones it just clicked and than I loved it and I thought it might just be absolutely beautifull. An album to be explored for a very long time.
