Is it whiny? Yes. Does the album do whatever it can to attract introverted teenyboppers who dance around wearing trenchcoats drenched in flowery blood? Yes. Furthermore, is it possible that The Used have conjured up something more stereotypical than a wannabe Caucasian rap artist with goofy attire? Well... That just isn't too much of a backbreaker to imagine. Debated flaws and whatnot aside, this self-titled debut recording was a bit easier said than done and vice-versa when it first came out. Bert McCracken's emotional vocal performance and the strong instrumentation were enough to lure even the most bizarre of fishes in the narcotic sea, and did it matter much if the lyricism was underdeveloped and too emo-oriented for one's tastes? This Utah post-hardcore act had registered a nigh flawless release with little diversity and a whole lot of charisma - an accurate summation from me.

Many favor this one over the 2nd output of the Used, but I personally never really liked this one, except for "The taste of Ink", which I love. Odd enough. On many spots I had the feeling all that could be done was put into the songs, like big string arrangements. Less would have been more here

It may be nostalgia on my part but the album all the way through just makes sense. No songs feel out of place, no songs get tired too fast on first listen and the vocals hold a lot of power which im a sucker for. Great stuff.

Although nothing new in regards to formula or artistic direction The Used craft an album that flows brilliantly from track to track, with minimal flaws, the vocalist over dramatic vocals only add to the appeal of this record.

For thier first album release, this is a hell of a album. I've listene to all thier albums now, and i have to say this and "Lies for the Liers" are my favorite. I remember when zippermouth first showed me "The Used". He let me listen to "The Taste of Ink" and i instatly fell for the band. With catchy one liners/(do you want a song of glory, well im f*cking screaming it at you)/, nice choruses /(taste of inks is rather good)/, and rather good drums and guitar, they are almost a perfect band. I have to say my favorite song is "Buried Myself Alive" seeing as how i relate to it the most. All thier songs are pretty dark, i guess is the way to put it, but all can be related to almost. A Great band worth more than one listen.

From fist listen this album has been heavy on my heart, and now listening to it I feel a little nostalgic. Its obviously written by a band that is still wrapped up in the confusion of life, and it draws the listener into an array of feelings that that pull you in every direction and in the same breath make you want to punch the person next to you and hug them as well.

I love this album. I picked up the second one and I was very disappointed. Every song on this album is so sincere and so meaningful, they weren't trying to impress anyone with this album, they were just making music that was meaningful to them. That's what I like about this one. Plus, they're from the same city that I live in, that makes them cool no matter what in my book.
