Where most people would call Achtung Baby the best 90s U2 album, I say it's Zooropa. Never has U2 been darker or more experimental than this underrated project. It contains my personal favorite 90s U2 song in "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)" while also expanding upon the industrial rock and EDM roots found in Achtung Baby. The Edge pretty much turns the album into a personal playground, experimenting wildly with how he can make his guitar sound like anything but a guitar. The album's second half contains some of the band's finest work, with darker cuts like "Dirty Day" and "The First Time" nicely juxtaposed with the slightly brighter but still twisted "Some Days Are Better than Others" and the most non-U2 track the band ever made, "The Wanderer." This is the best showcase of U2 being anything but their former selves, trading the bombastic stadium anthems of The Joshua Tree for the electronic textures and manipulations of the European dance scene of the early 90s. For that reason, it is one of U2's best albums, second only to The Joshua Tree in my mind.

This is my least favorite U2 album overall but it's still pretty good. I like Zooropa, Numb, Lemon, Stay, and The First Time but the rest of the songs are either just okay or they're not good at all (Daddy's Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car is my least favorite U2 song ever.)

Aimlessness, for better or worse, defines "Zooropa". Its introspective modernism sees its protagonists walk through life with metaphorical guns to their heads ('Stay', 'Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car', 'Dirty Day') or cast aside all certainty in 'The Wanderer' and the glorious title track, which quite literally declares, "I have no compass/I have no map/I have no reason, no reason to get back." On the other hand, the album's modest origins and rushed finish give us obviously unfinished pieces and over-parodic experiments.

first half: 3.5rsecond half: 2.5rseriously, Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car, Some Days Are Better Than Others, and Dirty Day are the most boring U2 songs I've heard. They have some mildly cool loops, but those loops just repeat and repeat without anything interesting happening. I love The First Time though.
