When discussing Montreal’s music scene and its current emerging artists, one of the most talked about is definitely Braids. With an EP already to their name – Set Pieces, the band has recently released their debut album Native Speakers, and is a major hit in both Canada and The United States. The album is composed of rich, extroverted sounds, resembling those of other local bands but also contains a taste of their Western Canadian roots. Many of the tracks revolve around funky vocal stylings and atmospheric noise which lightly resemble the work of Chad VanGaalen, a Canadian artist who also originated from Calgary, Alberta. Constructed by guitar, bass, drum and keyboards, we are exposed to an album that can achieve modernism while still being pleasurable to the ear. Many of the tracks have lengthy starts –most of them being loops, which creates an agreeable tension for when the climax is attained and also makes it a wonderful album to be listened to over and over again. Knowing that their album launch in Montreal was sold out, Braids is a definite find and producer of great music.
