Transilvanian Hunger is quite possibly the most important black metal album to date. Hell, it is the definition of black metal: horrible production, blast beats, shrieking vocals and simple guitar patterns. All the way through this album is pummeling, and never lets up. Even though the production may make it hard to listen to at points, it will command your attention and force you to sit through it's 8 bluggening tracks. I'll wrap this up quickly, if you're a black metal fan or a fan of metal in general, buy this album. It is more than worth your time.

This will be my go-to black metal rating. I don't get it. The awful production is aurally painful and it's absolutely devoid of musical value. Can't tell if it's of any lyrical value because the the vocals are unintelligible.

Honestly, this is my least favorite of the classic bm albums so far. It has all the essential elements, the atmosphere is there, but the whole thing feels so basic from a songwriting standpoint that aside from a few riffs scattered here and there, nothing caught my attention. Blaze was better. Score: low-mid 3.0. Favorite track: As Flittermice as Satans Spys

Over a thousand men who dare to overlook the importance ov Transilvanian Hunger or criticize it in any manner conceivable will be thoroughly patronized. In the name ov the supreme ruler, let the churches burn; by the unholy power vested in Darkthrone, their enemies must bathe via the blood ov the innocent. No mortal being is worthy enough to face what Transilvanian Hunger and its memorable cover art have in store for them. Now that I have spoken, I implore you to sit through what is undoubtedly true Norwegian black metal. Nocturno Culto and Fenriz concocted a LP that's highly recommended.

Black Metal Classic - this is the album I would suggest to anybody who asked me to define
Black Metal. This is "pure" (and I mean, ABSOLUTELY pure) Black Metal. No influences of any
other genre whatsoever. This is bare bones Black Metal - at it's highest quality. The
instrumentation is simple, no complexity there at all, nothing majestic about how the
intruments are played. Yet despite it's simplicity, the ATMOSPHERE and HYPNOTISING AMBIENCE
this record creates is second to none. So pure. So cold. So motherfucking dark.

Relentless and aggressive riff-fest. Probably the most straightforward Darkthrone i have heard, but that is alright when the riffs are this good. It does have small pauzes after each track (The spotify version at least), which is somewhat annoying

Classic bm is classic [2] Frankly I have a bit of trouble coming up with a different soundoff for this vs Moon as I found them to be very similar: just relentless, good old fashioned bm. I'd need closer listens in rapid succession to really tell. This felt like it had ever so slightly better riffs and even sharper prod, but idk if it is the version that I jammed but there are pauses after almost every track which breaks the flow a little bit. 4.2

82/100. Buried beneath a thick layer of permafrost, one can hear Nocturno Culto's raspy cries, like an ancient demon summoned from the dead. It's hard to describe this album without reverting to just that--- aesthetic. While one might view that as a limiting factor, I think that'd be overlooking the tremendous importance aesthetic plays both in art and black metal. Like a hellish medieval painting, Transilvanian Hunger captures a feeling of isolation, dread, and fear with impressive potency, exemplifying what the best of black metal is able to communicate.

Transilvanian Hunger is one of black metal's most seminal releases, often regarded by critics as among the genre's best. For the most part, this reputation is well-deserved: the production is lo-fi, but not overly so, the performances are solid, and the atmosphere is engrossing. It drags in the second half, though, and more variation from the rhythm section would have spiced things up. Nonetheless, Transilvanian Hunger is a fantastic release, and a must-hear for black metal fans.

The single most important black metal album ever. Every song is a masterclass on riffing and shrieking. Everything in this album is perfect. Not a single track drags due to repetition; The drumming is relentless and the production suits magically the music contained.
The songs are at the same time cold and raw; pure black metal misantropy and hypnotically droning.
Words cannot describe the supernatural feeling of hearing this, late at night, with headphones in a forest; believe me, I've tried it.
This is one of the best records not only in black metal, but in metal in general.
Also, try to find the translated lyrics on the interents; they're EXCELENT.
