Tim Hecker's forays into dissonance have undergone something of a maturation, the result being Ravedeath, 1972. I won't go into specifics - one will take from ambient music something else entirely from what another does. All that needs to be said is that this is essential listening, ambient fan or otherwise, and perhaps Hecker's best work yet.

Ravedeath, 1972 absolutely floored me upon first listen, and since then I've only come to adore it more with subsequent listens. To those not allowing themselves to get lost in it it's easily dismissible as ambient nonsense, but listen carefully to the static white noise and dissonance and you'll hear something much more organic; something hauntingly beautiful that's difficult to achieve in a genre where so many meander off and bore. It's an album that invites imagery and thought through the concept of destroying something beautiful; a notion that clearly grabbed Hecker. Some of the finest ambient songs ever recorded are here, especially the three part finale "In The Air" which ends the album in an emotionally devastating way.

Frost has a clear influence on the structures of these songs. It is more akin to his work within Theory of Machines as Ravedeath, 1972 still holds Hecker's elements intact, the way they are portrayed are much darker then his previous work.

For an album such as Ravedeath, 1972 to earn respect (if not outright extolment), people must first picture themselves floating in a void of vast emptiness; the realm itself has no color, which could very well imply that its newfound inhabitants are rejecting its existence, thus also deliberately ignoring the wonderful quality of sound artist and electronic musician Tim Hecker's work throughout much of this album. On the fortunate side of things, however, those who are trapped in this strange world will later learn to grow accustomed to their surroundings - and once the time arrives, these folks will also embrace Hecker's 2011 full-length record. Via imagery as well as overall atmosphere, Ravedeath, 1972 is kind of a tough release to grasp either completely or get to a certain degree, but I'd say that Tim's efforts here turned out to be nothing short of worthwhile at the end of the day.

Wonderful album. When I listen to this with a nice set of headphones, the background noises/field recordings sound like they are in the room I'm in. If I'm sort of zoning out while listening, I get confused and need to take off my phones to hear what's going on...rIt's hard to pick out a single track. I can have this album on repeat and forget that I'm listening to more than one track; everything flows nicely. The first time I heard 'In the Fog: II', though, was awesome.
