0.0 | Bitchfork | February 28th 11 | A very low 2.5. - - Things begin with shimmering guitar lines, I mean a beautiful, beautiful guitar cycle against a so-so-sort of psychedelic drones that eventually swallow up the guitar in favor of allowing reversed guitars/pianos(?) to join in on the fun. Slowly cymbal taps are added and the song becomes stochastic, as to build tension. However, things get dreadfully boring by this point, and the emotion that oozed from the first minute or two has left entirely. Worse yet is that the stochastic shit tries to build tension, fails, and then fizzles out. Anticlimactic - should have expanded on this colorful, resplendent bite of ambience and allowed it to be more than an intro to a shining example of unrealized potential. The next track is more consistent, as you know what you're going to get the entire time. Not a flaw, but a way to stay comfortable. Variations on another graceful, if this time it's morose, melody. This time it's on piano. Builds slowly, stops, and random psychedelic drones come in, which hint at a sense of loss without really committing to it. Perhaps it's Alex Robertson's vocals? If you didn't know, they're off-pitch and out-of-key. In between a tenor's range and a baritone's and it suits folk relatively well (mostly because folk is humble like his voice), but in a piano-based track - nuh-uh, it clouds shit up with mediocrity. The fact that he just howls with obnoxious timbre in these drones is just icing on the cake.
