I was all set to hate this album. I mean, let's be honest, who wants j-pop from Boris? However as soon as I heard Takeshi's giddy vocals on the first track I couldn't help but smile. From then out Boris pull out every cliched trick in the book, from corny synths to club friendly drum machines. But they sincerely sound like they're having such a good time that I can't fault them for it.

it's Boris but it's j-pop, it's j-pop but it's Boris, and if it's Boris' j-pop, then it's alright to say the most.

Very, very surprised by this album. It's incredible. Every song is good. You could consider this Boris's pop album, but that doesn't mean anything. This is quickly becoming one of my top Boris albums, but people are going to hate on this album, I suspect, since it's not whatever album they loved from Boris part 2.

Boris go J-electropoprockgaze, and it slaps. When it rocks, it's punchy. When it bumps, it's boppy. When it takes it slow, it's ethereal - but gotta say these tunes aren't the most refined one because we all know Boris is a guitar band and they're at their best when they let the guitars screm.

I just hope this will end up being an anomaly in Boris's discography and not the foretellings of a newfound direction for the band, because, as fun and enjoyable and catchy as this is, it pales in comparison to Rainbow and Pink and Flood. They're just way too good at that heavy stuff to keep up this shit.

Moments of sheer brilliance that this band can produce with a snap of its finger, are mixed with moments of pop-esque "naiveness" in the New Album, with the latter somewhat watering down the overall quality of the record. Nevertheless, the record remains a thoroughly interesting listen.
