0.0 | Ire | March 29th 11 | The biggest disappointment in Sputnikmusic history. This years' Emery thread is awful,
uninspired and tries too hard to recapture nostalgia despite losing one of its most
important elements. Can anybody really get over the fact Emery no longer has image spam? The
Emery thread is dead and we all know who helped in killing it. The We Do What We Want
thread is the definition of a disappointment.
Throw yourself a pity party, Sputnik.

4.0 excellent | Knott- EMERITUS | March 28th 11 | Everything everybody pretended to see in Shallow Seas. Heaven knows what everyone is talking
about a 'heavier direction' for, this is gorgeous. Except the closer, which is massively
gay.

0.0 | bloc | March 25th 11 | Like the title says, they do what they fucking want. Similarly, I'll rate this what I want. But seriously, as much as I love my Emery this may be their least satisfying album to date. Most noticeably, it's in the vocal harmonies; you might notice that, well, there are barely any which is a shame because that's literally a signature of Emery. Vocal harmonies are replaced by harsh vocals (which may or may not be a problem for you) but with all of this aside, this is still Emery as clever and sharp as ever. The music has improved technically and there is more thought put into what the keys are doing in each song. On first impression I thought the album was perfectly fine for some other band's debut album but one could expect a little more when it comes to Emery. EDIT: Nevermind this shit is awesome.

0.0 | SeaAnemone | March 29th 11 | With their newest album, We Do What We Want, Emery follows the will of God (he's been leaning towards a more scene style since ... In Shallow Seas We Sail started wearing off) in creating THE premier, overrated post-hardcore album of 2011. With in-your-face diversity, and an unwillingness to avert from the path that takes them away from heading towards absolute, musical worthlessness, Emery remain astoundingly and utterly consistent... in their ability to boost my objectivity rating.

3.5 great | guitarnater | March 28th 11 | Unfortunately, without Devin, sounds like Emery running on half-a-tank of gas. I'll be sticking with ...In Shallow Seas We Sail for now, but I'm sure I'll be back.

0.0 | CrimsonChin | March 28th 11 | It's not nearly as brilliant as In Shallow Seas, but not bad. Hopefully it will be a grower, and watch out for tracks 5 and 6, they weren't the best on first listen.

4.0 excellent | SpacePanda | March 27th 11 | Emery continues to prove that they are one of the best post-hardcore outfits, will a solid album that feels like a natural evolution from their last cd. If you didn't like them before, you won't now, but if you did, enjoy.

2.0 poor | solidness | March 26th 11 | First off, the lyrics are pretty bad. Sure, there's some vocal range here but nothing all that groundbreaking. Barely enjoyable, and this is coming from a hardcore Emery fan. They've lost all melodic elements in exchange for weak breakdowns and "hard" guitar riffs. Emery's worst release to date.

4.5 superb | PinkBlackberry | March 26th 11 | now THIS is Emery I can enjoy, The opener tears your fucking head off, the screams are so god damn pained and gritty and delicious.

4.5 superb | Crimson Death | April 16th 11 | At first I thought much of the album was mediocre aside from "Scissors", but I grew to enjoy it very much. The vocalist has superb control over his breathy and crisp tones. "The Anchors" is the perfect example of this . It opens with a soft, breathy, resonant and emotionally powerful tone. Then the song breaks out into high notes with a lot of impact. Eventually it reaches the bridge which provides the listener with a crisp, heady and smoothly annunciated tone. The vocalist is very versatile, and that is something that I tend to notice and am very impressed by because I am training my own vocals.

3.5 great | Biffuh | March 27th 11 | 3.5 now. But it has great potential to grow. The Cheval Glass is fucking genius. One of the greatest post-hardcore songs of all time imo. They make shitty breakdowns sound good. I hope they keep the heavier aspect of this album but go back to melodic parts of In shallow seas we sail.

0.0 | gabethepiratesquid | March 26th 11 | While at first I had my doubts, this turns out to be just as good as In Shallow Seas We Sail, simply in a different, more heavy direction. It's interesting how cohesive the band is without the second vocalist.

3.0 good | Alabaster Jones | November 30th 16 | On paper, We Do What We Want is not only Emery's heaviest album, but is also their most inconsistent. There's still something very charming about the band, but it would seem that In Shallow Seas We Sail is somewhat of a fluke in their discography. There's some great material here, as opener "The Cheval Glass" (one thing Emery never fail to do is make a killer opener), "Scissors", and the corny-but-heartfelt "I Never Got To See The West Coast" show. Still, there isn't as many catchy choruses or memorable riffs aside from the aforementioned tracks, and the emphasis on harsh vocals is puzzling given that they've never been the band's strong suit. The lyrics have also taken a hit from their last effort, being as wildly inconsistent as the songwriting. Thus, it's certainly not their best work, but it's got some classic Emery songs here amidst the ones that range from solid to filler to kind of embarrassing. It's like a microcosm of the band, really.

3.0 good | ebay | May 30th 11 | It starts off strong with Emery playing Emery at Emery's best, but then begins to lag as the album goes along and eventually ends with a gentle thud of mediocrity.

4.0 excellent | c0nf1n3d | May 14th 11 | The first six tracks of this album are all killer in their respective ways. "The Cheval Glass" is their heaviest song to date, "Scissors" has the coolest structure, "The Anchors" has a nice chill section, "The Curse of Perfect Days" is the catchiest, "You Wanted It" is almost as catchy, and "I'm Not Here for Rage, I'm Here for Revenge" has a great surprising changeup. The rest of the album works, but for some reason it dies out a bit after the first 6 tracks (maybe because the screaming is mostly gone). Either way, songs like "I Never Got to See the West Coast" are still catchy, just not as memorable to me. Regardless, a great album.

3.5 great | iamSeraph | April 6th 11 | a letdown considering In Shallow Seas. I hate Devin Shelton for leaving this band, seriously. the circumstance of two clean vocalists was the key factor that made Emery special, just like e.g. Mayday Parade. both bands screwed it. good job. not. aside from all that the record is fine in what it does. but it is just sad that they wasted so much potential. hopefully this will turn out as a grower in the end.
