Somebody mentioned recently that Vacation is the Pet Sounds of punk music. Obviously, that is a ridiculous statement, but the thing is Bomb The Music Industry! fans really might think that. In today’s music scene, BTMI! might have the most slavishly devoted fan base in the US. Its interesting that all the reasons BTMI! is great to those people, the sloppy punk riffs, silly and ridiculous shouted gang vocals and hooks, the hilariously stupid (but imminently relatable and thought out) lyrics, and the disregard for songwriting conventions, are why most people would HATE them, but BTMI! do everything with so much enthusiasm and energy its like watching a kid learn how to ride a bike for the first time. Its pure magic.r

It's like if the beach boys made a punk rock album. It's this awesome blend of upbeat dreamy lyrics about being where you want to be, on a nice vacation somewhere on the beach and in the sun (hurricane waves, why oh why,everybody that you love, etc) and then the reality of the situation that we're not there yet (campaign for a better next weekend, cant complain, sick later, felt just like vacation). Btmi really shines and sticks to one sound for this album, and its beautiful. Instant classic

The vocals are too low in the mix, and it bothers me a lot. The music is great, but the mixing is what brings down the score for me. Better off listening to solo Jeff material. (Edit): This has grown on me a little more, but I still have some of the same gripes.

Great energy and fun songwriting ("Campaign for a Better Weekend," "Vocal Coach"). The production is subpar, though, and I get that the vocals are supposed to be raw, but a vocal coach is what this singer needs. He goes off-key constantly.

If Scrambles and Adults saw BTMI perfecting their signature sound, Vacation sees the band finally reaching its full potential. A fitting end to an outstanding legacy.

For the longest time this year, Vacation was the most frustrating release in some time. No ska, clean vocals, and almost devoid of that vintage Bomb the Music Industry! chaos, Vacation was ticketed for a one-way trip to the honorable mentions list in July; an unsettling position for a BTMI! record. Yet, after finally accepting Vacation for an uplifting pop-record as it is, BTMI’s 2011 installment serves the spirit of orgcore punk with a sheer enjoy-ability factor: whether this is conveyed through the ever infectious “Vocal Coach,” “Why, Oh Why, Oh Why,” and “Hurricane Waves” or the fact that “Can’t Complain” and “Campaign for a Better Weekend” are some of the best lower-key tracks in Rosenstock and crew’s arsenal. Vacation is far from BTMI’s best record and that’s just fine, because it stands on its own enough to be celebrated as one of the better releases of 2011.
