I went from wanting to fuck to just wanting to lie folded up in the arms of a loved one. Thursday drops the slinky and sexy undertones of Weeknd's previous mix and instead opts for a more focused and daydream-y like approach. Perfect soundtrack for the post E morning doldrums when you feel like less than nothing and the night been is a vague and foggy afterthought

a dreary soundtrack to superbad. bleak, druggy, horny, this mixtape invites you into along for a ride into 50 minutes of truly liminal entertainment. this is then-anonymous tesfaye's subtlest, most sustained and atmospheric of a cursed classic trilogy. thursday is snooty in a way that arguably clinched the deal. there's something endearing about this.

Suffers from the same flaw that House of Balloons did - song length. With that being said, "The Birds Part 1" and "The Zone" are probably The Weeknd's best songs to date.

delivered on my expectations without being what i expected. thursday shows off a sunnier side of the weeknd than we've seen, but not at the expense of the emotional heft and lonely lyricism that defined house of balloons. while this release is probably not destined to outshine its predecessor, it does see tesfaye and co. proving they are capable of the kind of consistently awesome material that justifies the massive hype that precedes them.

Less hooked-filled and more nuanced than House of Balloons, Thursday does lose some immediacy, but compensates with an even darker aesthetic: it's not (only) about livin' the fast life, it's about how this fast life creates destructive relationships. The record's discourse is thus impregnating its sonic characteristics (or is it the opposite?); Tesfaye is almost pushed to the background to leave more space for the gritty production.

The hazy, hedonistic, angsty sound that The Weeknd operated with on debut mixtape House Of Balloons very much makes its way onto Thursday, as does the projects ability to adhere to a concept and especially an aesthetic. Perhaps the most harrowing and unnerving moment in The Weeknd's discography is heard within the doomy guitars of "Life Of The Party", in which a nervous, uninitiated young woman is coerced into a gangbang, and a heavy insight is given into the way Abel Tesfaye views women and his various escapades with them. Which is to say, he views them simply as another plaything, on the same level as the pills he pops or the alcohol he drinks. The production is similar to the debut, yet more dark and violent, which adds a lot of personality to the record and accentuates the trip further down the rabbit hole Tesfaye seems intent on taking the listener. Needless to say, it's quite the trip.
